Default Pop/Rock Tune

I'd appreciate some feedback on this one.....

SoundClick artist: Shadow People - Shadow People

IMO it's the best mix I've done so far but I could always use some improvement!

Thanka

That kick is REALLY boomy in a weird way. It sounds like it was tuned really weird. It has a ton of low end punch, but I think it's excessive. Hopefully simply turning the kick mic down solves this issue. Listen to this on a sub system and you'll immediately hear it.

You want to be really careful in the 3-4k region on those electric guitars. With the mix up hot, it hurts. It's clear you are a fan of bright sounds, which I'm all for, but you've got to make sure that when you crank this up loud it doesn't make your ears bleed. I wouldn't say it's THAT bad, but it's something I'd be cautious of. The secret (which I'm still trying to figure out) is how to get it sound bright without actually hurting. That's an art in itself.

The bass sound is pretty cool. I like the growl in it.

Cool song.

Thanks for the tips Brandon. All of the drums were actually recorded live and then I converted them to midi triggers pushing Addictive Drums, except for the overheads of course. I'll try tweaking the EQ of the kick and possibly just pull the fader back on that piece.

So you think I should pull back all the guitars at about 3-4K, or just the lead parts?

Brandon pretty much covered it all. I want to point out that when the kick is in the mix as it is, it pretty much pulls all the sound out of everything else. Instead of turning it up, add some other frequencies to it. I would have to go back now but It seemed the cymbals were quiet? Vocals sound good. Not sure I like the bass sound myself but to each his own...Cool song... Keep it up!

Crank up the mix loud and see if they hurt. If they hurt on the final mix, you get an automatic "F". It's the rules of the game.

I think it sounds pretty darn good except maybe a tad harsh, maybe you could eq the 2 buss just a tadd, but I'm not sure if that is a good idea or not, can't say anything about the low end cause I'm on the computer speakers

AMEN. Let me know when you figure something out. The question for me is "Is it partly due to digital recording or is it all that I don't know what I'm doing yet?" Is there possibly a reason that if I eq out the high end on the mix it sucks the life out it and if I leave it in it sounds brash and harsh. The search continues
