Good Afternoon guys! I appreciate any kind of input or suggestions that would help me make this music better, especially in the area of mixing. I'm still very inexperienced, and many more mixes to sabotage, but I love to learn and I guess that's what makes this so addictive! Anything I should add or omit? Too little or too much...Please bash away! |

Nice tune, with a very appealing vocal quality - strings lend a kind of retro 70's feel to the proceedings. A few things you need to pay attention to: I can hear some pops & clicks on the recording, so you may have to look at increasing the buffer size on your interface. There are a few bits of iffy pitching in the vocals, but generally, nothing that couldn't be fixed by dropping in a few edits. The acoustic guitar seems to lag in timing at points - are you having latancy issues? You might want to look at ways to monitor with zero latency. The drums: Is there any reason the snare is panned to the left? Usually the main drums like kick & snare work better when panned centrally, as this really helps to balance a mix dynamics-wise. The kick & snare sound quite "boxy" - try reducing around the 400hz mark on both with a fairly narrow Q to get rid of that. Overall the mix sounds over-compressed. I suspect you've compressed the mix as a whole to increase perceived level. I'd suggest controlling each individual mix element's dynamic level first - particularly drums (both individual & the kit as a whole), bass & vocals need to be controlled at this stage. This will mean that you can afford to compress less at the output stage & the mix will retain more of it's natural internal dynamics.

Hi nippecraft, I like the tune, but the first thing I would suggest is to address is the timing. At some points it feels like a total disconnect between instruments. Next, take a look at the drum sound. I would need to know what your source trax are to give any suggestions on how to have them sit in the mix properly; it sounds like some sort of overhead or room micing if I had to guess. Great start! Keep the train rollin. If you would like to get a feel for how I do drums or vocals, I am currently in the Bash lineup myself. Look for Bash these Alt-Soul tunes. The computer provides the canvas and the palette, it is up to us to paint the picture! Regards, - Mike |
