Default My band

Hey, This is my band!! I just want to get as best a quality and sound as possible... and I just dont no how... it sounds all jumbled up and stuff... I recorded the drums with my Alesis Multimix8, into my M-Audio FastTrack pro... I used a MXL 604 and some condenser called an Apex for overheads, used a shure sm58 on the top of the snare and some nameless dynamic mic for the bottom, and another nameless dynamic for the bass drum... this was all recorded in my basement... For the guitars i used my MXL 604 I have a room padded completely with bed foam ahah thats wut i did them in and the vocals were done in there to he used his shure sm58 the bass was done thru a toneport... so thats everything i attempted mixing it in sonar ha but please tell me how to make my recordings sound as good as possible!!http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm...6-b9ab7fe6a358

Ok, first off:
1.) The overheads are coming through the mix way too much, they are way to bright, you cant really hear any of the snare or bass, actually, I cant hear any bass drum at all. So basically make the overheads a little less prominent and "turn-up" the bass and snare, it feels like theres no real beat to it because you cant hear the beat keepers (the bass drum and the snare)

2.) Turn up the vocals a wee bit

3.) Record the guitar again. It was out of sync a bit with a few things, especially at the end, it just sounded like a jumbled mess. The little riffs at the end of each "loop" were way off any beat that might have been there.

4.) The guitar riff sounds a whole hell of alot like another band I know of

All I hear are cymbals getting smashed, some muddy guitar, and the vocals(which sound that they are distorting - too high recording level?).

Can't hear kick or snare.

Guitar has that 'fizz' commonly heard, removing any kind of edge it might have had, and replacing it with foam.

Pretty much what they said, but I really like the vocals. It probably wasn't what you were going for because it sounds out of the norm. They are really gritty it accents the type of vocal it is.

Snare
The snare is getting lossed. I've got a feeling that this is partly due to the drummer not hitting the snare nearly hard enough. I realize when playing super fast that it's hard to kill the snare, but that is what seperates the men from the boys.

Cymbals
You should check your mix on a few systems to see if the cymbals hurt. I have a feeling they are going to, but I can't say 100%. They are really bright in here.

You've done a great job of getting ambiance into your kit. In fact, it may be a tad excessive for this type of music. Mostly, I'm hearing a lot of ambiance in the kick drum. This is great for some kinds of music, but I you are getting a lot of low mid junk from the kick drum in the overheads.

For the metal stuff, the kick drum is a big deal. It needs lots of meat, it needs to be fast, and it needs a lot of high end definition. When too much kick drum kets in the overheads and room mics, it can get in the way of all 3 of those.

You may try lowering your overheads by 2-3dB. That may fix both the cymbals and the kick drum room sound.

Kick Drum
You need more balls in the kick drum. It sounds to me like the kick drum may have been tuned poorly, but maybe not. Don't be afraid to kill everything from 200-600Hz in a metal kick drum. In some music, boosting 250 in the kick is pretty cool, but probably not for this song.

I'd compress the kick drum track. Maybe an attack of 15ms (to let the initial attack through and little else), a release of maybe 120ms (play with this one, I like longer releases sometimes on big, mean drums because it sort of creates this suction type of sound. It's hard to explain. Just play with it). 4:1 ratio, with maybe 4dB of reduction during the loudest kick drum hits.

I'd probably do the same thing for the snare drum.

I'd use parallel compression to really make the kick, snare, and maybe toms attack like crazy.

Check out:
Free Kjaerhus VST Compressor Plugin Great For Parallel Compression
http://www.recordingreview.com/artic...mpression.html

and the definition of parallel compression in the music glossary.
http://www.recordingreview.com/music...l-compression/

I always send all my drum tracks to a single bus. I'd put a super mega fast compressor (with attack of maybe 0ms and an release of 50ms or so) and knock 3db or less off the entire drum track. This is to catch the loud peaks that may sneak through and also lets you make the drums sound louder in the mix without increasing the peak level.

Vocals

I thought the vocals sounded great for this type of music. Great job.

Guitars
Seam to be pretty good too.

theres just one problem!! My soundcard like doesnt record anymore!! I usually, if i wanted to record the bass and snare and overheads into different tracks, would plug the overheads into my multimix8 to the soundcard just line in... then plug in the snare to the left input on the fasttrack then the bass on the right and set it all up like that!! But now my soundcard isnt recording anything at all!! any one have any ohter solutions!! I have a second usb port in the back of my pc... if i hook up the multimix to that would it work??
