Default Mud

I started out by wanting to make a nice clear sounding song.
I ended up with a multi layered deep dish mud pile.
I'm not happy with the guitar tones, but I think I should still be able to get something that isn't so bogged down in the low end.
I think I need to rethink a few things, I think.

The whole mix is dark. I'd start by placing a high shelf boost @ 2k on the entire mix by 2dB.

From there I'd start cutting mud from one instrument at a time. It's hard to say exactly what the high shelf boost will do.

Yeah, Mag, it's pretty muddy. The bass guitar, in particular, is booming too much. Try compressing its track? Definitely work with each individual track before mixing anything together.

It's just my preference, but I like to hear the lead vocal more in the middle. That space seems to be taken by the guitar, while the vocals are on each side with a delay effect. For me, it leaves a hole in the middle.

Keep working wth with it!

So a whole lot of eq, compression and some reverb thrown in the mix later, and here's what we get.
Thanks for the suggestions.

What a difference! I went back and compared it with the mud; now it has a sparkle to it, for sure. Much more clarity. You've got the vocal and the guitar fitting pretty good in the sweet spot. The bass is tame, too.

Nice gong......
