Alright, here's the latest offering from my crappy home studio. I'm aware that there are several issues with this mix (maybe I shouldn't post it til I fix those, but I'm impatient) which I won't mention cos once you know they're there you won't be able to hear anything else I'm sure you'll all be able to pick them out straight away anyways.Enjoy...

Hey guys, thanks for the tips. To be honest I kinda threw the mix together in a hurry when I should have been sleeping cos we took down all the live tracks off our myspace and I wanted to have something up there as a teaser so to speak. Once I get a chance to play with it properly I'll take the bass down a little, and fix the drum mix. The guitars are kinda low cos if they were louder then the horrendous timing problems would be that much more apparent. I'm not sure exactly what's happened, but ever since I updated the drivers for my mobilePre to the Vista versions, anything I record ends up slightly shorter on playback - I figured I must be losing samples from the stream, so I decided to increase the buffer size, but now I keep getting an error saying I'm recording too many tracks at once. I had a look around for this problem - the only fix people are coming up with is to open a new project and try again. Once it happens in a particular project it'll keep happening. It's not just Cubase - I've seen it on Nuendo and Sequel (whatever that is) forums too. It does seem to be limited to Steinberg software though, and only seems to happen in Vista (surprise surprise). So until I get around this problem I'm reduced to editing the audio files I've got, easy enough with the bass and vocals cos I can see where notes begin and end and can shunt them in the right direction, but a guitar track is just a big black bar all the way along ![]() Even though the vocals are slightly off, I still prefer them to my last song - I realised that standard tuning is out of my range, so we tuned down a half-step and I'm much more comfortable singing now. I was able to do more than one take without stopping to catch my breath for an hour or two. Now I just need to figure out where to put harmonies Maybe I should give Bad Religion a call...

![]() Instruments sound good, but your singing is unconfortably perched between singing and yelling and I think you need to go more to one side or the other. If you can carry a tune, go for more of a singing voice. If you can't, look at some motivational material like your utility bill or your payroll taxes and then "scream it like you mean it". Post up results if you try both ways. D |

Hey all, sorry I haven't been updating this regularly - I've been swamped with other stuff. I've been taking way too long over each song so I decided instead that from now until I've all my songs recorded, I'm just gonna throw together a basic mix of each track and move on to the next one, then iron out the problem areas afterward, so you can all expect a lot of rough mixes being fired in this direction soon. I figure I'll post them all then collect everyone's suggestions and apply them later. That said, I wasn't happy with this song so I gave it a bit of treatment before I moved on, and here's the result. I found the tinny "phone" guitar to be too distracting throughout the song, so I just left in in for the intro and outro and muted it for the rest of the song. The kick may sound weird as well cos I was in the middle of reading a mixing article so I was fucking around with some of the in-built Cubase reverbs, which may still be applied. Once I have a few ideas thrown around, I'm gonna try some vocal harmonies... fingers crossed

Hey everyone, I'm back ![]() If you seen my other recent posts, you'll have noted that I got myself some new plugins to play with, so last night I decided to tackle this song once more. I'm still having some teething problems obviously - i.e. not knowing how much limiting is enough with out going over the top, and where to boost the lows and cut mids etc... Well, I hope someone can give this a listen and let me know if I'm going backwards or forwards

Y'know what? Actually, I've just listened to it again now (having not heard it since last night when I was working on it) and I seem to have completely killed the hats. Dammit! Also, the intro is a lot louder than it's meant to be... Wait here, I'll be back tomorrow with the real one :/

Well, I'm back! ![]() So I worked on it again last night to fix some of the levels I'd fucked up, and you can hear the result below. However, after my "accomplishment", I decided to have a shmoke while listening to it, and I noticed my input meter jumping around a little. That's when I realised my guitar cab mic was plugged in, and I got the crazy idea of recording the sound of the mix in the room, and mixing it back in to see how it sounds. This version is also attached, for your listening pleasure. However I fear I've lost all objectivity at this point so I'll leave it up to someone else to decide if it's better or not...
