Default Mix/Master advise on jazz tune

Would you guys please critique the mix and mastering more specifically during the flute and horn solos. This is my first attempt to do my own mastering.

I find the cymbals and the bass too far forward in the mix. I find it masking some of what's underneath.

Sounds a little weird to me not to have the flugel in for the head. Like whats the point of bringing in an instrument just for a solo with no ensemble playing at all?

Overall though a very pro sound and performance.

You are right about the arrangement, I just talked to the horn player about playing a little counter melody on the head. I will check the mix again, I hate when you have a clean recording and then you dumb down to mp3 quality.

Thanks richiebee, for your helpful comments and kudos-!!

Nice, its almost strange how loud and clear the ride cymbal is. Its almost like its a feature instrument or vocal, yet I like it. If u can remix you might want to lower it. In the day and age of sampled cymbals I enjoy hearing it. Over-all real nice work.

Thanks Peter-!!

When I try to lower the flute volume the drum vol comes down as well, because of the leakage.

Wish I had an iso room(s)

Jim,
I've heard some really great stuff here. I've been into R&B just cause its easier to pull sounds off a computer.(gets a little boring) Its all done in the control room. . Hope you get some more space to do your live stuff. Enjoy the challenges.

Thumbs up Re: Mix/Master advise on jazz tune

Nice. Particularly the horn. My only comments would be to allow a little more space between the instruments. i.e., you might move the guitar a little further out to the right to balance the percussion on the left. You also might consider having the horn and flute placed in different locations just to add a little variety to the landscape. Really nice. Love it.
