Re: METAL - Lamb of god - Laid to Rest (cover)
Hi! I literally LOVE this song, great playing!
I feel that the whole mix is toooo much smashed, I think you brickwalled it a lot
Also, the guitars are very good, but they are fighting, expecially the one with the flanger, that is covered from the others, they need a bit of EQing, IMO.

Nice! very close to the original mix. I think the original guitars have a tad less bottom end though. Love this song! Lamb of God fucking rocks!

Re: METAL - Lamb of god - Laid to Rest (cover)
Cool!
Really nice!!
Ultra picky mode ON:
- the sub explosion at :22 sound more like a strange POC if you listen without sub.
- the kick or the bass are maybe carry some low freqs sound a bit hollow. Like a slow thunder sound, a far away thunder sound...Hard to really explain, but it should be somewhere around 40-60Hz...I can hear it because of the kick drum beating almost the entire song.
Rockin'!Just doing it for fun!

Re: METAL - Lamb of god - Laid to Rest (cover)
thanks man! Im glad you appreciate it! cheers!

Yes spot on man. those were my exact thoughts after i posted this. any suggestion where to boost/cut on the lead tone vs rhythm tones?
thanks for appreciatin man! I did some tweaking on the low end. kind of like a personal taste of a mix.
was that bad or good?
Hey man how's it goin! glad youre still active here. you've given me a lot of input that helped me a lot in my previous mixes. Actually, Im mixing blind when it comes to the low end. I have no subs. Im just usin my ears and instincts. what sounds good is good for me but its not enough. I have to know the basics and application. What frequency would you suggest that the kick and bass occupy in metal mixing applications? and how far would i go up the frequency chart to make the bass glue with the guitar tone. I hope you could help me out. I would also appreciate if you had some links on tutorial like in youtube or in any site that would help me out in this department. thanks man!if you have spare time you can watch my videos on youtube.

Re: METAL - Lamb of god - Laid to Rest (cover)
Well I'm not sure what to do with the kick and bass, to be honest. But here what I could imagine doing:
Bass:
- boost the bass between 120-140Hz slightly
- hi-pass the bass aroung 80-90 with a 12-db slop.
for the upper frequency is more difficult to tel without hearing the bass original sound. Mayb boosting a bit around 3-4k could help, but not sure.
Kick:
- cut som 100-140Hz to let the bass breath
- Boost around 80HZ
- hi-pass it around 40-45 Hz
- the click freq for metal seems to be around 10Kz. At least this is where it has mainly worked for me.
Let's see if that could help clearing a bit the low thunder rhumble I tried to describe earlier.
For the SUB kick hit, I think there is something too prominent in the 5-8K area. It make the sub-kick hit to sound like a tom without any resonanance or no balls. This listening without a subwoofer.
Never really find any good tutorial on the web, but most of the help received was through RR. So keep posting here!
Cheers!Just doing it for fun!

Re: METAL - Lamb of god - Laid to Rest (cover)
Don't have much to offer technically, but sonically I prefer the first mix. I'm listening through headphones though and there's a lot of talk of bass frequencies but the first mix sounds much more meatier. I don't know if there was too much bass or something and my headphones aren't capturing that in the first mix, but I prefer that over the third mix. Although I suppose it's a preference thing, the third mix is more controlled and compressed it seems, nothing pokes out, which could be more of what's trying to be accomplished.
The lead octaves in the second half of the verses are also more prevalent in the third, which I imagine comes from ff_ when he suggested the EQ cut. I personally like that part in he back nice and quiet, but hey that's me. Also in the original LOG version there's only 2 guitars during the verse, in your version the octaves play over 2 rhythm parts. That's up to you though, I like your version more
sounds much bigger.
Finally, I think the bass line hits a wrong note or something at 2:04.
This mix is redonkulously sick! Just dirty. Next you need to find a vocalist.

Re: METAL - Lamb of god - Laid to Rest (cover)
Ok ill get picky because you asked for it. Keep in mind that i think you're doing a great job so far! Great playing too! I will try to keep in mind that this is a mixing preference thing because i don't think you want it to be exactly like the orginal , am I right?
-The "flying saucer chorus lead" at the begining and end is wrong, I'm not sure if its because its too thick, too fast chorus or lacks reverb or something. But it sounds way apart in an inappropriate manner.
-There's an excessive round box sound (around 500hz me thinks) that is true to the LoG sound but I think you over did it a bit and/or the fact that your track barely has any reverb glue might make it stick out more then intented. It could also be the reason ppl seems to enjoy the first mix more. Basically LoG has a very low-fi guitar sound and you kinda hi-fied it up a notch.
- Ok im going to be anal on this one. WHERES THE EPIC POINK POINK Adler snare of epic annoying proportions? That metal rim sound HAS to be applied here man! It's pure LoG!
- The bass boosts are awesome.
- You are awesome.
- That is all.

Re: METAL - Lamb of god - Laid to Rest (cover)
thanks for the input guys. this wouldnt be possible without you help. Dwarfgrinder thanks for the ultra pickyness man. Thats exactly what i needed. yah that small lead part with the chorus also gave me a headache. I'll tweak and tweak until i get it to stick better to the whole track. I get you on the snare thing man. also one of the challenges that i encountered. snare mixing is one of my weak spots. Any tips man? or maybe a link to a soundsample that i could trigger would help me a lot. I'll work on this one more but at least the balance has been acheived. thanks to all of you guys!
haha thanks man! you are awesome as well with the ultra pickyness. cheers man!
