Default Metal Digital Recording!

Hi guys, I'm so happy to find this webpage, I needed help from a long time in mixing tips etc... I have been working on a demo. I play rock, but I want my mix to sound a little bit like linkin park guitars and metal drums (with reverb snare), I record my guitars using amplitube but they sound sooo digital.... I know is not the best way. I also tried to Mic them with my SM 57 using Amplitube distortion into a console, it sounds a little better, but anyway I get a noisy mix. If I change distortion to a softerone, I loose all the power of the mix... I also have problems with bass. I use a plugin call Ampeg something like that.

I need your opinion, and I need even more your tips so I can make a semi-profesional mix with the stuff I have. I use mostly softwares... Drums are from Battery 2... Guitars from amplitube 2, bass from ampeg, and keyboards from diferent vst plugins...

MySpace.com - Thaumasia - MX - Metal / Fusion / Melodramatic Popular Song - www.myspace.com/thaumasiamex

You can listen to "Eternia" is the better mix of the 6. Please, need your tips! THX!

Myspace is useless for audio engineering. Can you post a clip?

Ok. I tried my mixing console but I get better sound from amplitube, but even with it, mix sounds king of crappy... do you know why? I used a very low treble distortion because if i lv up the trebles my mix go too noisy... i can upload the other version if you want.

I would suggest panning your two main rhythm guitars center a bit.
Also your cymbals that your "riding" on are panned out too far.

ya the cymbals are out to far.....but id take the rhythm guitars and pan them out 100l and 100r make it sound a bit fuller .....that and if you ever add vocals the guitars and vocals will fight with each other to sit right in the mix. linkin parks guitarists sound is so digitalized...none of it really sounds like raw tone. just like the dude from fear factory, who actually uses Guitar rig 3 for his live sound....you can see a video of it on youtube somewhere.

Hi again guys... Yeah, Linkin park sound is so digitalized, but is so powerfull and clean too. Thats what I'm trying to get, but it seems that amplitube guitars drown in the mix. I tried to bring them up with some middle and less trebble. I also added some keyboards to the mix. Listen this version and give me your opinion please...

In this genre I always go as wide as possible on the electric guitars. This is especially true if the tracks are doubled.

I'm not sure what you mean by "digitized". As you know, pretty much everything these days is digital. John Mayer is more than likely recording digital. So this "digital" word doesn't hold much meaning.

When I think of "digitalized" I could see where you would get an industrial kind of thing happening, but NIN The Downward Spiral was recorded to analog tape.

Lincoln Park is know for having robo enormous guitar sounds. If I could snag guitars like that...well I'd still probably be broke. ha ha With that said, you are gonna have a hard time with direct guitar solutions. Your guitar tone in this isn't horrible. If the drums sounded better you would probably get away with it.

So what are you using for drums? These sound a bit too Casioish for my tastes. You should check ouf DFH Superior 2.0 when it comes out this month.

By the way, I like the music.

thats what i meant by the panning 100r and 100l...forgot to throw the % in there though.....lol ...i read about that on another site, sure works, makes it sound so much better.

thats what i meant by digitalized , they are layered upon layered with major fx and eqing, just what i meant, going DI you really cant get that type of sound, i dont even think AT2 or GR3 your gonna get that sound.

go to:

Guitar Amp Modeling • Index page

see if one of those guys can come up with a preset for you to use, or tell you what combo of fx/impulses would be best......without using impulses your guitars will sound like junk.....check that site out and see exactly what impulses will do for your DI recording.....I dont have a amp right now so its all i have to use, and it actually works quite well.

DFH superior 2.0 is coming out?!??!?!?!? I didnt know this, wow thanks im gonna have to go check out toontracks website.

Thx for responses guys... Escuse me, what do you refear to fx/impulses? maximators, multiband compressors and stuff and stuff like that? or other kind of effects? I'm using the Yamaha Final Master for giving mi guitars more streght and be heavier, but I think is not enough. Im actualy using EZdrummer for overheads and toms and Battery with a custom drumkit I made. I wanted the bassdrum to sound a little like techno with rock. I dont like very realistic drums for my song, but maybe I can try another samples... By the way, Im downloading Dfh, and also the BFD.

ok go to here:

Guitar Amp Modeling • Index page

look around there forum they explain alot about impulses.....and have tons of impulses for download, basicly a impulse is a .wav file thats really small, you load it into a third party vst program after your amplitube/guitar rig

for example i use sonar 7
ill open a new session and on track 1 in my effects bin ill put an instance of guitar rig 3 or amplitube after that ill load a program called Voxengo Boogex

found here for free:

Voxengo

which i then load my cab impulse(the little .wav file) into
by loading the impulse you just click "file" down there at the bottom.

and in amplittube/guitar rig make sure you bypass(amplitube) or close(guitar rig) the cabinet simulation, in other words turn the cabs off in your program, cause boogex is the new cabinet...and u can get impulses for just about any cab out there, now mind you its never gonna be as good as micing a cab, but it is the closest you will ever get...check out the forum i posted if you have other questions about amp sims and impulses. another amp sim is Revalver mkII you can load impulses directly into that program, bypassing the third party vst of your choice. You can also use boogex with real preamps and pedals too(check link at bottom of page) hope this helps.

if you want a little more in depth explanation here is a good thread to read:

Guitar Amp Modeling • View topic - How to use impulses
