Let's Kill God
My wife doesn't care much for this song and she listens to (crappy) pop so I feel it only fair to forewarn you all that this song is a bit out there. I don't find it catchy at all (except maybe the bridge.)
I would especially value input from anyone who can listen on a system with a sub.
Not sure what else to say, so bash away!

what Kyle said...
Its a strange tune.. sometimes the drums sound a little off time. But it has its own charm...

Re: Let's Kill God
Ditto on the Iggy. Kind of Zappa-ish in some ways too. Hell, throw in a little Alice Cooper and Trent Reznor influence on the vocals for good measure.

There's a little bass in the Sub, but not much. Some kick too. The kick is hard to hear though. How did you record the drums? There seems to be too much buildup in low-mids (at least with the bass and intro guitar, also low-pitch vocal parts) and the high mids (high-pitch vocal parts, sometimes with the "funk" guitar).
I think this is great fun. EQ tweaks and more low kick would help a lot. Even if you have a higher kick sound in some sections.

Just a little? I was going for more of a bass (guitar)-driven sub range. It's sort of hard to mix that if you don't have a sub. At least I know I can not be so conservative there. There's a little bass in the Sub, but not much.
The kick is mostly in the lows, not much in the subs at all. I just used BFD2 for the drums and processed them until I liked them. Some kick too. The kick is hard to hear though. How did you record the drums?
I guess removing the low mids would give it more of a hi-fi sound. The chorus does sort of blur together. I was trying to fix that but I think that is how it was meant to be. I'd say it's mostly the guitars doing it with the drone-ish part. I agree about the low vocals being comparatively low in volume, but I'd have to actually have to break up the vocal tracks in the middle of phrases for that and that would probably drive me insane. There seems to be too much buildup in low-mids (at least with the bass and intro guitar, also low-pitch vocal parts) and the high mids (high-pitch vocal parts, sometimes with the "funk" guitar).
I tried using an exciter to bring out the extra brightness this time (mastering plugin on Audition 3.0,) but that may have caused buildup in certain frequencies. EQ only does so much before it gets annoying, though.
Thanks for the input guys. More bashing is always welcome.

Re: Let's Kill God
I really like this. Only Iggy vocally, otherwise not at all.
Yes Trent & a bit of Jane's addiction.
It's kind of prog funk - have you heard Nomeansno? Reminds me a bit of them.
Not listening on subs but to me I think it needs more bass or low mids generally, kick especially.
If it were me I would deaden the snare a little too.
But I like it a lot.Cubase 5, Tascam US-122 (mkII), Fenix Tele, Suzuki Nagoya, Alesis Q49, Sennheiser E815, Roland MA-12s, Sennheiser HD 215s ... and a ton of plug ins

Re: Let's Kill God
Thanks for the kind words. The last time I went for the bass-driven subs I waaaaay overdid it. Idk if it is just a matter of needing to know my monitors and room better, or if it's just sort of hard to mix subs with 8" speakers.I really like this. Only Iggy vocally, otherwise not at all.

Adding more subs in may just mean going back to mixing square one as raising the subs up will undoubtedly cause pumping (I think I'm about at the threshold for modern-sounding limiting as is.)
Now here's a dumb question: will giving a release time on ALL my mastering compressors and limiters of around 300-500 ms reduce sub pumping? It makes sense in my mind anyway... Either way I do think I can clear out some low mids in general, which will probably give me a couple db's. I'll have to play around with this. I'm glad I posted the mix after all.
What surprises me is that no one is commenting on the snare sounding fake. To me it sounds like it's machine gunning. I think the compression is the biggest culprit, but don't ask me why. All the drums are BFD2. I'll have to figure out which frequency(ies) to pull out of the snare. If it were me I would deaden the snare a little too.Last edited by PunkGuy; 08-03-2012 at 02:47 PM.

Re: Let's Kill God
I listened on a system with a sub, there was barely a kick in there from what i could hear after the intro, the snare is dominating the bassdrum, which is fine if you want it that way.I would bring the level of the kick and snare closer to each other,by how much is up to you obviously.
The snare also does sound very "drum machiney",maybe mix the velocities up abit.
Very unique track,at first i was wondering how this would be classed as rock? But i guess it is/or may be.
CheersYou can only learn music,by listening to music.Let the frequencies flow.

Re: Let's Kill God
I didn't know I was THAT good at drumming :sarcasm:!You might want to quantize the groove to more human-sounding
Believe it or not the drums are one continuous, unedited take. I don't need to do it that way but I guess it's sort of a badge of pride.
I was afraid of putting too much bass in the sub (I've done that before,) but I will go for more in the future. I do agree that the snare is a bit loud. I think I will go back to more punk-sounding snares--the beefy snare just isn't my thing.I listened on a system with a sub, there was barely a kick in there from what i could hear after the intro, the snare is dominating the bassdrum, which is fine if you want it that way.I would bring the level of the kick and snare closer to each other,by how much is up to you obviously.
