Re: Inspired by a crapy job
No takers?... Ok, I'm game!... yeah, I can hear you've really put some work into this, & for the most part, I think you've succeeded quite well. The song is structured well & has good variation & flow, if a little too sombre in tone for my tastes... Mix-wise, it needs a fair bit of work, though. Virtually all the different mix elements would benefit from high-pass filtering to get rid of the low-mid "mud" in the mix - guitars in particular sound dull & muddy. Your vocal is quite muddy too, so as well as hp filtering it around the 100hz mark, it would benefit from a gentle boost around 1.5k to improve intelligibility & clarity. Also, the vocals would benefit from some "air" eq (gentle shelving boost around 10k) - watch for sibilance though. The vocals are not being helped by the reverb you've chosen - it tends to cheapen them & make them sound like they were recorded in a very bad room. Try a nicer vocal reverb - a bright "plate" type might work, & make sure you crank the "pre-delay" setting to about 50-80ms. The drums (bar the toms) don't sound too bad, although the the snare & kick would benefit from a slight eq dip at about 400hz to get rid of the boxiness in them... not sure about the toms, they don't sound so good - they need more attack, a dip in the low-mids & something to enhance their sustain & let them ring out a little more - perhaps some reverb. The bass is getting lost under the woolly guitars - sometimes you can increase the presence of the bass by boosting around 1.5k. The acoustic in the intro sounds good, but also needs to be high-pass filtered, as it is quite boomy in the bottom end.
