Default Im new at this thing!

Hey, Im really new to recording, in general(so ANY criticism is appreciated). I kinda wanted to do a test, to see if Im really crazy, or if other people can notice something in my current recordings.

Heres something I just kinda tossed together, no lyrics.

But I think it shows why I want to get another system than garage band+internal mike on my laptop, as I want that improvement that isnt in the tone of my guitars(which I think are fine, not great, but fine) but in that there is almost this compression of the instruments into one type of sound. Am I going crazy thinking this?

Anyway, thanks for listening, heres the gear used if anyone cares.
Guitar is a
Gretsch Tennessee Rose (filtertrons, my fav) going into an 80's Fender Champ

-Rythm guitar uses a Deja-Vibe from Fulltone
-Lead is slide guitar, with a OCD Fulltone stompbox

Bass is a
Peavy Fury IV going into a Peavy Micro Bass

You used a computer mic on your laptop to record this?

Not bad, champ.

I would get a recording interface. It wouldn't be a bad idea. You can't really judge anything from a computer mic other than that your bass and guitar sound pretty good and that your room sounds pretty good.

I am curious about this internal mic on your laptop. It may be the culprit in the compressed sound.

Recording that on an internal mic is fantastic but if its like my mac book the mic is very poor and you will become frustrated very quickly I think. My first interface was a USB from a zoom multi FX and that really opened up a lot of avenues using garageband - for very little cash. I've moved on since then to mic's firewire and a whole room in the house for my hobby but from your attempts so far you will be surpassing my efforts very soon.

Keep going at it.
