Question I went a little industrial. Need some bashing so I can continue with vocals.

It's maybe a cross between Portishead and NIN, I don't know. It was way heavier and I toned it down some. I'm going to put some vocals on, but I'd like to see where I'm at with the music. My main thing is the bass. I know bass is one of the hardest things to nail and I'll be damned if I haven't been at it for hours. So, bash away, I need it. thanks

Woo hoo! I can see why you're second-guessing the bass frequencies. That's one LOWWWWW bassline.

On my system, I think you're in the ballpark. There's a lot of bass/subsonic information going on, but it seems to work for the song. I'd like to hear it in a club with a good set of 18" woofers at a high volume to vibrate one's colon!

My only complaint is that a few of the bass notes seem to vary in volume consistency (as bass notes often do). I'd suggest you check out a good video tutorial by the legendary Bob Katz here. The tutorial talks about mastering, but you can apply it to your bass track.

Hey BDF, thanks for the link. That's the kind of help I'm looking for. I'm in a continual struggle with bass. Every song I make, it seems. I'm gonna check out the vid now. Thanks

Lab, I definitely like this. It's well-tracked and mixed.

I would like to hear the intro a tad different somehow, though.
Either, make the intro shorter or add some noise elements to keep it changing. If you had some weird snippets of backwards talking or fuzzed-out machinery noises or something along those lines just floating in and out real quick in the beginning, I think it would put it right up on that pro-level playing field.

I think the drums and bass are well balanced to each other and I can hear the bass very plainly on my small puter speakers.

I'm going to listen again.

Ok, after listening again:

The only reason to add any of the noise elements at the beginning would be to get and keep the attention of those with a gnat's attention span. I like how it builds myself, but just trying to think of the gnats.

The lead guitar part could use a tad more presence right when everything comes in, I think. What I would try would be to boost it at 3.2khz with a Q of 1.3. Might, or might not, need to cut it at 800hz to keep that bass nice and recognizable when you boost the lead's volume a tiny bit.

After it all comes in, I'd go right back to the way you have it sounding now.

Just my ideas, but I already like what you have, so take what you will and leave the rest.

Good job man.

We're on the same wavelength, man. I've already been making plans on that intro and you nailed pretty much every thought I had about it. lol I thought about shortening it, but I think I'm gonna go the creative route and try to come up with something bizarre, yet functional. I'm still thinking that bass is way wrong. Anyway, thanks for the kind words and thanks also for the confirmation of my lingering doubts about that intro. lol

Yeah, still the hardest thing for me to ever be sure of. I do think what you have so far has a nice growl and seems to be sitting well in the mix, at least on these crappy speakers I have at home. That's usually a good indicator to me. lol

Haha. The gnats. I like that. I know a few gnats.

I like that idea on the lead guitar. I will definitely try that tonight. Man, I appreciate it. I'm going to try to top anything I've ever done with this one.

Hmm...I wasn't expecting it to sound like this when going into it. I expected "all-out" industrial. I'm actually pretty impressed with this tune dude (not that I wouldn't be, of course!) I really like this type of organic-industrial stuff man. Good shit...s'like a breathing industrial song, rather than being too machine-like. I listened to the whole song before reading everyone else's comments, and I gotta say...I was thinking of suggesting that the intro bit should have some samples\soundscapes droning in and out as well...then I read Vulconizer's comment about just that. Good idea then, if I do say so myself...Anyway, I actually like that bass sound you have in there. If there is anything about it to bitch about, it'd be too minute for me to tell. I really can't be sure though...I'd have to listen on my home monitors (I'm @ work). Also, I love the droning guitar bending itself up indefinitely like it does...felt like being on the edge of a cliff getting ready to lose balance, but without actually reaching that point of no return. Sick song dude...When I can cank my monitors up, I'll try to hone in on the bass and make suggestions if needed. Sounds pretty "pro" on these speakers though. Peace.

[Edit: Also, in as much detail as your willing to divulge, what kind of instruments and plugins did you use for recording this? You know, the drums, bass, synths/virtual instruments (if any), guitar effects, etc...just curious]

I'm down with the sub-bass thing, the super low end fills out the mix. I agree about the intro, I just about stopped listening, but since this is a rough draft, add some stuff and re-bash.

Cool stuff! - Bring on the vocals! I can hear it breaking into a "rattley" double-time drum part at some stage, but maybe that's just me.
