    Default Generally about bashing.

    Hi Gys

I just been thinking, am i the only person that does Gospel Music in this forum? almost all the music that i listened to from here i get Rock and metal and i dont even know the other kinds of music. when i listen to the music here its not easy to comment or advice or understand other people's advices because i dont really understand the genre i am listening to.

i think i must listen more to this kind of music to improve my understanding to it. or!

    what are your plans?

Hi there. Gospel music comes in every form these days. Gospel rap, country, rock, metal, etc. I just finished a 21 song scripture album for a client that was acoustic and voice with some strings. The "rules" of what makes a good mix are pretty universal in all genre's. I'm not sure if that helps or not though.

you are 100% right there Paul999, even here in SA we have these kinds of Gospel HiP Hop, Gospel House and so on. as the time go on i will understand you even better. when i am listening to rock or metal i just hear a lot of noise than listening to Gospel, International and Local Gospel Bands, live and studio programming.

I hope you understand me right because i am trying to explain what i mean but it not easy.

I totally get what you mean. When the Seattle scene was huge with Nirvana, smashing pumpkins etc. it didn't sound like just noise to me but it certainly sounded like a downgrade from what was happening just before that. It took me a long time to really appreciate some of the music from that era.

Music has so much different way of sounding it is very hard to understand them or even beeing able to listen to them. I can't stand listening to free jazz stuff, they all just sound to me like stupid music nerds doing mental masturbation (Am I sounding too harsh?)....however, I had to listen to it to understand I hate that...then from "recording/mixing", exept for "dedicated" instruments, rules are basically the same.

If working without distortion on guitars is your normal way to go, I can definitely understand you beeing "lost" with metal tracks that have 3 tracks per side of fully distorted guitars

I have no personal experience in gospel music outside the one I had the chance to share with you. My critics may not be as accurate as what they could be on a rock song, but I'm still able to discern a bass overpowering a mix or a snare killing my ears. For specific tone, like guitars, Djembe, Marimba or whatever, I will just rely on this simple method: Do I like it or not?

I think this is a way of contributing, after listening to 100 rock song you'll probably be able to critic the guitar tone in itself....

I hope that all this blablab makes some sense..

    hi there nkujankuja,
I felt very nervous when I began commenting on other people's music, but found that as long as I listened with a sense of humility I muddled on through.
It's a fantastic way to learn - especially when you read people's suggestions and then get to hear how they have been implemented. I love it now!

    cool Emma,

I just figured out that there are a lot of xhosa speaking south african like me who listen and like rock music a lot. now they can tell when a song is not sounding good or a bad mix just like any kind of music. i am looking forward to be like that. did you guys ever in a situation when you had to mix a gospel song in real world like Cece Winans ok Kirk Franklin kind of Gospel? if yes how was it? how did you approach that as a rock engineer?

Do you work with rock music only?

I'm looking forward to hearing what you've worked on. And I agree, listening to as many styles of music as you can handle will help in soooo many ways. For example, I'm not really big on listening to a ton of country music for enjoyment, but I've become a HUGE fan of it the last year or so for listening with my 'mixing' ears. Some of the best mixes I've ever heard are coming from that neck of the woods and I have learned a TON just from listening to what they're doing in Nashville. Using some of these songs as reference tracks have helped a lot, even when I'm mixing a completely different genre. Listening to other genres also helps for finding ideas when you have your 'producer' hat on. I had recently given a client a cool trick for this very folksy acoustic tune that he was doing by throwing out an idea that I picked up from a rap tune that I had just heard. I basically ripped off the idea, but since it was a completely different genre, nobody would likely even pick up on it. All that to say, there a ton of benefits to listening to whatever you can get a hold of.

Thanks Bholst, you remind me something now. i never worked with live drums and never worked very close to a band that plays live drums so i never recorded live drums. i always been working with FL Studio and Reason for drum programming but since i collaborated with Kukeux in a song where he had his drummer to play drums for that song i developed a huge love for live drums.

He was a rock drummer "i Guess" and he played the drums for that African Gospel Song and he nailed it. now i am planning to buy me a set of those and see if i can get a good drummer. That raised a question in me that: what is rock music? a set of Guitars played together very loud? if a rock drummer can play Gospel drums like that, that means a rock guitarist can play a guitar line on a Gospel song.

Colaboration is a very good start to learn the other genre. what do you guys think?

i`d love to hear some gospel music of yours!
anything with meaning a and passion always comes accross well,
i have a great interest in the early blues scene, which as you know stems from gospel,
in fact if you think about it, most modern music in someway comes from gospel style of some sort.

good to hear a variation of music. i like all genres.

music isnt bound by any race or style, and everybdy appreciates a good melody. its the universal language of the world.

hope you find time to post some of your work,

    kind regards

    E

sure LazyE why not! I can do that with pleasure! the only way that you will get advices is when people listen to your music and criticise your left right and centre which i believe it is a good thing to happen so you can grow stronger and wiser.

I've ignored Music for 28 years, and in the last 6 months/mostly last 4 weeks I've learned more about it, than I ever think I did before.
The folks here are awesome, and I really appreciate their good nature, and helpfulness.

The only thing that sort of bothers me, NOT MUCH is I can't just enjoy a song for a song anymore. I listen to every song on the radio now, picking out things, instead of just relaxing to the melody.

Oh by the way, I'll get around to doing some Gospel soon, My folks are Preachers, so I almost have to give them some.

It will be Southern Gospel style for the most part, where Country spawned form years ago.
    Just Having fun!
