Default First Try at mixing this

Looking for opinions on what's bad and what's good. The song is called Spy in the Sky.

I think it's good that you've created a new user experience by being able to pan the song hard left and get the unplugged version and then pan right and get the rock version. Of course this technology is still in it's infancy and we have to wait till they come out with Dulby 3.1 till we can fully take advantage of this new user experience.
Which is bad... or too bad.
Sorry I just read the Slipperman sp files and maybe it hass messed with me some hohoho.
heh
Try panning the guitars centerish, not dead center, but let's hear the guitars out of both speakers.

Ok I changed the panning. Is that all you future mega hit making producers and engineers have to say. I woudn't be asking if I thought the mix was perfect. If you don't like the song that's fine, I'm trying to improve the mix. I didn't even play aything on this.

The whole mix is kind of cloudy for my tastes. The guitars kind of blend too much into eachother. Sounds like acoustic/electric are both compressed too much. Try doubling the acoustic and running one halfway left and one halfway right. it will spread out the sound more (unless you're going for the left/right effect, which you may be).

I'm not sure about the recording but for me, I prefer to listen to more of the acoustic guitar.

I'm hearing a lot of "mud." You may have some frequencies from different instruments stepping on eachothers toes.

I think Spy in the Sky sounds awesome!!! Great job. If the controls were in my hands, I might be tempted to give the snare a tad more snap and sizzle by the tiniest bit of boosting maybe 2k and 10k (I'm guessing). Might also be tempted to bring out the high end on the drum overheads, but only by a small amount, and only if it didn't interfere with anything else. But really, to me, the song sounds just great.

Default Re: First Try at mixing this - Some Suggestions

I really like the song and think it has lots of potential.
There are a couple of things that you might want to look at
to improve it.

First, your drums are the energy and driving force for this
song and they are getting lost. What usually happens is,
they are fine when you start, but as you add more
instruments, they vanish. You need to hear the backbeat and
the cymbals clearly for punch and accent. Maybe add sparkle
to the cymbals.

Next, your power chords are a little too thick so they are
eating up the space that the drums and bass need. Try
cutting some low mids to get them out of the way but still
have power. Try compressing them also, if you haven't.

Also, your bass is completely lost, and if you think about
it, it is the only instrument that is playing a sort of
melody line so it needs to be heard as a secondary hook.

The vocals sound great and the acoustic just needs some
more room by cutting the frequencies of the other guitars.

Listen on different size speakers because certain things
vanish when I listen on my big monitors, headphones, laptop
speakers, nearfields, etc.

These are just a few tips that I hope will help you and
others.

Take Care,

Khaliq

Cut out some of the low end on the bass and maybe add some mids to taste.
After that you'll have to adjust your master compressor.
