Default First Post - eek!

Hi everyone - I started recording from scratch about 6 months ago after a long absence from music. This is my third song and hopefully I'm getting to understand cubse a little more with each attempt, although I'm a bit of a technophobe at heart and don't know the first thing about mixing.

Quite a few things jump out at me as needing attention but my ears need a break form this track so I'd really appreciate any feedback you could give.

Cheers - Jus

NB: I'm using a line 6 tone port, cubase SE on a laptop

Thanks dude! It's very different to the other tracks I've done - never sure how a song is going to turn out. This one was meant to be just guitar and vox at first but I got a bit carried away!

I got the line 6 toneport on recommendation from a friend and so far I'm very pleased with it - although I don't have anything to compare it to.

Wow, Very imaginative! Definitely captures an era. I would try to make the drums a little more retro sounding in keeping with the vibe. I can't hear much bass in comparison the the drum level. Some of the cymbal crashed stick out a bit in an odd way. Vocals sound excellent.

thanks for your feedback. I'm using groove agent 3 for the drums and I'm finding them a bit of a nightmare! What do you suggest - a different drum kit? I'll have another listen to the bass - it's half bass guitar and half moogue type synth thing!

I wasn't going for a particularly 60s sound but I guess that's how it's come out - not a bad thing! I suppose a lot of my influences comes from the 60s and 70s.

Cheers for taking the time to have a listen.

Yeah, I'd try a different kit... Or use the existing one & process it with some tube simulation / overdrive / tape simulation plugins...to dirty up the sound in a good way.

I like this a lot, the drums just need a little work. The panning seems a bit extreme and they lack cohesiveness. What VST/organ did you use for the flute/mellotron sounds, they're great.

Smile Re: First Post - eek!

Hi Greg - Yeah I think I need to look at the drums as well. Trouble is everything I try is guess work! When I get my Line 6 back form the shop I'll have another play with it. At a couple of points I've put the toms through a rotary speaker to get a boom boom effect - I wanted to simulate the sound of bombs exploding. This hasn't come out as well as it sounded in my cans though.

The flute is a cheap old flute I've had at the bottom of a cupboard for years and the weird sounds are from free VSTi. One is a free moogue (can't remember the name just now) and the other is "Da Hornet" which has some great lead sounds. There is also a heavily effected rhodes in there.

Cheers for your comments Greg
