Default fHumble fHingaz / Snake Oil Salesman - Bash a Rattler!

Been working away furiously in my (rare) spare moments to concoct this... It's a song I wrote a while ago - A little allegorical tale about charlatans of every persuasion... I've demo'ed it a couple of times, but hopefully this recording will provide the completed version - trying to go for a phat, phunky mix here... I've found that listening regularly to other people's mixes has been a real help when it comes to critically listening to my own - But I still desperately need a few more sets of ears to critique it as well... Thank you in advance...

...& here is the new (& hopefully improved) mix

I'm not a fan of the midi(programed drums) but you made it sound very good and convincing on this.the wha guitar solo is cool. Not my style of music but hey it sounds good to me.bongos rule!

That is one FAT sounding mix! I am at work, listening to it on my Radio Shack headphones, plugged into my work computer. I just about got on my desk and started to dance around. I Loved it! The only thing I can say right now, is to back off the threshold on the Limiter on the stero mix, let it breathe just a little bit. But I will listen to it in the studio when I get home. This is the kind of song that just makes you want to crank it up!! Great Job!!

Actually, these are real, live drums I recorded in my studio - I didn't play them myself, the drummer in the band I play with did... He pretty much nailed the song in 2 takes (we've been playing it live for a while). Believe it or not, I've had this drum track in the can for about a year... it's just taken me this long to get around to doing something
about it! Ahh... the conga's - yeah they were a different story - my bro-in-law played them, & they took a LOT more doing!

Yeah, I was wondering if I might have gone a little over the top with that... Let me know what you think... When listening on some other systems, I kinda felt I might have weighted the mix to much in favour of the rhythm section... So perhaps tell me your thoughts on that too.

Oh no! I don't think that's a good thing! No, not-a-one sample has gotten on any of the drum or conga tracks... Not that I wasn't tempted in moments of frustration when I was struggling to attain the drum sound I heard in head!

Love the 'Superstition' kinda vibe you got going on the second verse...really grooves when that kicks in.....almost wishing for some kind of shaker or tamb when that gets going....to accentuate the swing.

Also - a great and natural sounding vocal....with a clever lyric...

Liked it a lot...it 'lives'...

Thanks tolo. Believe it or not, there are actually both tambourine & a shaker on it... If you listen closely, the shaker comes in on the second verse & the tambourine comes in during the middle 8... Hmmm, perhaps I should make them more prominent...

Nice tune, fhumble! Enjoyed the performance, very nice! I do agree with the less limiting approach, let this thing breath! Enjoyed the tune!
All me best!

fHumble fHingaz,
I finally got back from my gig. I think I am getting to old for that sh&^. Anyway, i listened to your song and it got me up out of my chair and I was doing the funky dance. If you you knew me, there isn't much that will do that for me. Just a couple of extremely minor things. Like I said before, back off the Limiter just a touch so it can breathe just a little bit. I love what your doing there, this is an "In your Face" type of song. It seems that the bongos are just a little hot in the mix. The drums may be just a tad hot also. But don't sacrifice the feel of this. It is really cool! I LOVE IT MAN!!! Man, the panning automation on the guitar is really cool! The vocals in the chorus, I don't know about coming up, but I would really like to hear the "Snake Oil Salesman" part a little better. I am really nit pickin' here though because I think it is a really awesome song. I would be extremely proud of it the way it is if I were you! Fantastic job!!
Joel
