Default Cover - Turning Japanese

I'm fairly tickled with the way this came out, but fresh ears are a big help. I did 9 guitar tracks including double tracked/octave lead parts. All guitars were Strat or Les Paul and all were direct through the Line 6 Gearbox software. The drums were EZ drummer. Bass was direct with no sim and 2 keyboard parts were the Halione One synth and one was the Prologue. Both were included with Cubase Studio and controlled via my old Casio CZ101 straight from the 80's. I have one vocal track - doubled with a copy/paste. The double is about 1/4 of the level of the original. I have 5 various chorus and harmony vocal tracks - all were treated with the Classic Compressor as an insert and Glace Verb as a send. Nothing on the 2bus but the dither plug.

Let me know what you think.

Good job.

Good playing! I think the drums are too high in the mix, and the bass too low, the drums seem to change level through the song at first loud, then they get quieter. Something funky with the compression, it is damping and undamping the track I think.

I did push the drums up in the last pass that I did. I have vocal compression on each vocal track but nothing on the whole track, compression wise. I'll try to drop the drums and pump the bass a bit.

I never listened to the original with close attention but your mix would RULE with some BASS in it! Don't get me wrong I hear the bass, but I want to FEEL the bass! GIMME!!!!!
If I was being honest I would say the vocal performance wasn't the best but if it's what can be done, it's what can be done. No offense.
Drums all sound a tad low in the mix but the tracking sounds square so an easy fix.
Guitars sound down right spiffy. I like your layering! Nice work there, zero issues there.

I always liked this tune too... I think you've got a pretty good sounding mix here, but you need to take some care with the vocals...They sound kind of "muddy" to me. Maybe you could high pass filter them around 80hz. There also seems to be a few pitch issues with the backing vocals. Also, this might just be personal taste, but the drums sound a bit flat & sterile to me...maybe you could "cosy" them up with a tape sim plugin.

Not easy to match the classic original, but I think you did a good job! It's possible you need some sort of compression (or an adjustment of the compressor/limiter) to make the drum volume more consistent.

There is a lot of stuff going on in that song. Well done. I think the guitars a distorted quite a bit more than in the original. The drums sound dry or something. Bass needs to come up and possibly it seems to be fading in and out bit like the drums for some reason. I was digging it for sure though.

Hey fun cover, it's great that other's like some wacked out stuff besides me..

My issue with this mix is that non chorus parts sound weak and thin through my expensive headphones at work, but the chorus sections sound much bigger/fuller. I'm sure a lot of that has to do with the multi-layered background vox in the chorus sections, so I'm wondering if there's a way to balance it out a bit more, meaning either add another guitar track/vocal track or two in the non-chorus sections of the song? (as the difference in "fullness" between the chorus's and non-chorus's distract me a bit).

Just something to think about..

hey alan!!! nice work. i like the guitar tone. the drums are pretty much uneq'd and sounds natural. i like it. the bass guitar needs some pumpin. put some comp in it. i heard some mud in the first chorus. its on the vocal harmony. nice whammy alien sound effects here. good job. a little more time and this would be great.
