Question A Capella Single Voice- Need Help!

Not sure where to post this, but I need help.

I know a few songs that sound good with just me singing, nothing else. However, I have an acoustically dead room to record in. Here's a song I recorded with just me singing (it's a rough copy, I just recorded it, so the singing isn't the best). I used some reverb, tell me, too much, too little, not the right kind?

I was thinking maybe a live recording in a good hall acoustically might be the best idea.

I'd like to hear what you think!

Default Re: A Capella Single Voice- Need Help!

The rules are certainly WAY DIFFERENT for a recording like this. For example, I have no idea how loud a Capella songs should be. So I have no idea how much compression is cool, for example. I'd still probably use just a little bit (maybe 3-4 dB of reduction on peaks).

I'd put a high pass filter at like 80Hz or something. There were a few rumbles.

It sounds like you continualy moved back from the mic. Listen to the end and then listen to begin again. Keep this in mind. I think it sounds better with you back from the mic, personally.

You need to understand that reverb is ENTIRELY subjective. As long as you don't sound like a shitty demo from 1991, you should be fine. I think the reverb level fits the song, but it may sound cool in a huge room, a bathroom, or a room that is more live. Try it. It's not like you are hauling a drumset around!

The reverb issue is a tough one for beginners. I used to think that there was a certain amount that was "proper". Well, there is a "proper" amount, but its on a per song basis. Some modern records are very dry, some are very wet. It just depends. Do whatever you like!

Personally, I'd add some bagpipes to this one. For the music video, I'd have an enormous picture of William Wallace with fire and blue stuff on his face and you could just stand in front of it. That's just my "vision".
