Default Blues tune.

Here is a jam I threw down the other day. It's all me execpt for the organ thats a dude in my cover band.I had the drum kit miced up After a long night of recording a local band.So the next morning when I got up at the crack of noon I laid down this little jam in a few hours. Its a yamaha studio kit,A gibson V threw a silvertone twin twelve amp,A couple of acoustic tracks,My triton for the organ and thats it.I just got a new toy (a distressor)so I have been using it on the lead solo and the kik drum and snare on this track.I plan to re record the solo and I have some cool lyrics and a melody for this lil nugget.www.sterlingsoundstudios.comAttachment 1482

Very cool groove. Love to hear what you do with it. Sweet tone on the solo. If you hadn't mentioned the organ in your post I would have had no idea it was there.

On my system, the snare is more meaty than I want would in the 100-250 region and I like a meaty snare. It may just be popping out more than I'd prefer. When the song starts that snare is VERY loud. I'm all for a loud snare, but it's kind of dominating.

The bass is also really damn meaty as well but in the much deeper frequencies.

These are things that I may miss on my studio monitors too so if I were you I'd make sure to double check this mix on outside systems with subs to make sure you want to go THIS meaty because I probably wouldn't.

I'd like to hear more 3D space in the mix particularly with all the guitars. I'd have delays and reverbs all over this thing. I wouldn't let it wash out or get cheesy. I'd just want to add to the "in the dark" vibe that this song seems to be screaming for.

It kinda sounds like pink floyd's breathe...
I find the snare a bit too loud. The bass is also very present but I like that...
I would turn up the volume of the solo guitar, just a little tiny bit.
Very nice solo by the way - nice song , I've got it on repeat

Thanks Brandon for the review!I monitor thru mackie hr824's and some alesis mk2's and some b&w'S for the final. I need to treat my controll room.I spent alot of cash on gear but overlooked the room. Now I will work on treating my room.I am gonna finnish this tune and add vocals and do a remix and I will post it later.I think I'm getting a good drum sound and the bass is meaty with that low end growl I like.I have been trying to use this distressor I just got. This thing adds beef to all it touches so I gotta be carefull. You said the snare and bass were "too meaty" Thats what I put the distressor on.I need to work with it more.I have added so much new gear this year I'm still trying to learn how to apply it all.I have focused alot of my attention on getting a great drum mix and recording acoustic guitars. That seems to be the hardest for me to get right.I have a client in my studio now doing some cool acoustic stuff I will see if he will let me post his tunes on here.

AH HA!!! My damn drums are always too damn loud too using those stupid HR 824s. There has to be something to it!

Now that I have my ATM-50 studio monitor headphones, I'm seeing a common theme. Before I render a mix, I switch to the headphones. I ALWAYS turn the drums down.

You just got one too? Awesome. I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE mine. I wouldn't say that mine adds "beef" though. In fact, on some tracks it's made them a bit "thinner" in the lower midrange but in a good way. I've noticed that everything sits in the mix MUCH better if ran through the Distressor and I'm using less EQ.

In regard to your bass and snare, I thought there were too meaty at their current levels. Both of them were up high in the mix. It's very possible that pulling each of them down 2-3dB would totally take care of the problem.

I think you are getting really good drum sounds, by the way.

Wow, fantastic guitar playing. I'm impressed. I agree the snare is too out front though. Whole track could stand to be multi-banded a bit IMO to compress the lower freqs. I'd def reference a similar commercial track on your monitors to mimic the EQing. I would also like the guitars to be more present. They seem to sit behind the mix a bit too much for me. But overall, really cool groove and excellent soloing. I LOVE playing this kind of stuff. Kudos. BTW, I'm always harping on folks getting 1K's ARC if you can. I have a terrible room, but ARC software has made a HUGE difference in the stereo imaging of my room. REALLY clarifies my mixes these days. I'm using Genelec 8040s with a 7270 sub, and the ARC just focuses everything greatly since my room is a friggin' box with no treatment. Plus you get a cool omni mic! For the price, I think its well worth it whenever you can't hire a pro to treat the room properly.

Agreed, what kind of room did you track in, what kind of kit? Details?

I think that the guitars are getting completely stepped on by everything else. Work on bringing those babies up.

Thanks for the drum comments.I have been working hard on different mic combos and placement. On that track I used a Sure beta 52 in the kik thru a Api 312 preamp, with a Yamaha subkik in front of the kik thru a Api 312 mic preamp with the head off and a blanket over it.Snare I miced the top with a Sure SM 57 thru a Melcor mic preamp,Rack toms I used a Sennheiser 604 on each rack tom thru a Vintech 273 mic preamp,Floortom I used a Audix D2 thru a Avalon 737sp preamp,Overheads I used Two Akg C1000s mics thru a custom built missle launcher mic preamp,Hi hats I used a Sure SM81 thru a Robbie mic preamp,And I had a mic on the ride cymbal 4" off the bell thru a millinia mic preamp.I plan on doing a re-mix of this when I'm done with the vocals and organ tracks so I will bring up the guitars a bit then and I will repost. The room I have to record the drums in is pretty live.Somtimes I use gobos to divide up the space so everyone can be in one room while tracking kinda like jamming at rehersal.People seem to like the vibe at my studio. You can check out my little studio at Sterling Sound Studios
