Default Bash My First Post/Prog-Rock Mix (Instrumental)!

I hope you guys like it/have a fun time tearing it to shreds. It's going to be part of an album thats going to be released in March '08. All mixing was done on Sony MDR-7509HD phones.

Greg.

Sounds really good, love the song. My only criticisms would be the drums. In places where there's a lot of repeated hits on the same cymbal, you could do with playing with the velocities, at the moment it gives the drums away as being programmed. The drums also sound a bit thin, maybe some compression could help, especially some parallel compression on the kick and the snare.

Other than that I thought maybe the rhythm guitar tone was a bit thin sounding...it was fine to listen to but I'm being nit picky.

The clean guitar at the end sounded great, as did the bass. Nice work!

I really love the bass sound on this track. It's clear and punchy.

Also I love the volume swells around the 3.10+ mark.
The drums do need some attention in regards to velocity, just to give a more natural feel.

Nice work on the guitar harmonies, they really kept me listening.
Good work.

Hope and Briza have very good points. The drums are unnatural, first of all. Second, they need to be brought up in the mix so that the kick assimilates the cool bass work.

The riff at the beginning of the verse kind of reminds me of a 70's rock song, but I can't place it. Boston, Kansas,....?

I guess the consensus so far is re-do the drums. Great playing! I wish my old fingers could play like that!

Thin Lizzy Lives! (I said Nazereth first, dumbass!)

As a rock tune, the drums need to be "natural". I don't know how to tell you how to make them more natural sounding, to me the cymbals are just seem fizzy. (hope that makes some sense.)

the first half of the tune was really was spot on on the guitar sound and bass mix. Really the drums aren't bad, it just seems that with the rapid stuff, it does sound artificial. I don't really understand all that rapid kick stuff anyways. That was the one metal concept that is just all show and look at me.

in the B part, the bass to guitar complement seems to have been lost with the Bass being too forward in the mix and tonally not quite fat enough for my taste.

complements on the guitar playing! first rate.

rhythm guitar might be a bit too hot during the guitar solo on A part.

A+ for having a bass part that is audible by everyone, and the drums are great, but a little quiet, but its still good.

I really appreciate all the nice feedback. Left ear guitar was done with a Boss GT-8 5150 setting and a Dean Evo Playmate with a PAF and an Original Duncan JB from a '60's Les Paul (don't even ask me how that one happened). The right ear guitar was done with an AVT 50 combo through a 5150 Cab mic'd with a e906 from Sennheiser. I actually have a 5150 MKII that I had modded to shit (which happens to sound excellent, the best distortion I've ever heard on an amp, and a great clean too, noise issues prevented me from cranking it...my 86 year old aunt lives in the room next to me =(. Bass was done with a Marcus Miller Signature with an upgraded preamp from John East, Run through the Sansamp Bassdriver DI with knobs set to the SVT setting into a presonus TubePre into my Firepod (incase anyone was wondering, everyone seems to love the bass). I really need to mix this sucker through my KRK RP5's, I just blew a tweeter and have been doing this crap at 11PM so volume issues are obviously apparent. I did another mix of this which I think came out better, but oddly enough my guitars were clipping... the reason that it was odd that they were clipping is because I ran the guitars with Limiters on them and I recorded in 32 bit float as well as put a Limiter on the Master Bus. I'll try playing with the velocities, I told my drummer they sounded a little fake (the cymbal work at least, everyone and their mother samples snare and kick these days, so it's kind of "natural" to have that processed sound to them). I still have to fit vocals into this mix (which I tend to be pretty decent at I think, the vocals just haven't been finished yet). If anyone else has any suggestions to maybe liven up the mix or any other feedback, I would love it. Thanks again,

Greg.

I like the overall recording, but the drums sound like "pee wee" league drums. I'm not hearing any low end at all in the kick drum, but plenty of high end snap. I'd want to hear way more BALLS in the drums.

Other than that, it sounds good.

The music is cool!

I won't mention the drums, since everyone else pretty much covered it.

Real nice guitar playing, and nice tones. Really like the acoustic tone. What's the sound effect during the beginning of the acoustic guitar part?

I'm at about 4:00 and it reminds me a little of Dream Theater with the harmonies and syncopation. Fix up the drums a little and this will sound great!

However, listening to this, it's hard to hear where the vocals will "fit". I'm curious to hear how it will sound with vocals.
