Default My first mix...Heavy Metal ;) BASH!

I was a bit wary at first of putting this up as its my very first mix, so had a few ciders, manned up and put it on here to slam.

6 Piece band, Vox, 2 guitars, bass, drums, sampler.

Its all digital (apart from vox) as I was still purchasing my mics at the time.
So if anyone uses Pod Farm / Gearbox and has all the model packs, I can send you the tones I use if you want
(You may not need all the model packs, but you'd need the bass model pack one the bass tone, and the metal pack for the guitars, not sure on the other bits)

From my own judgements after giving it some time to listen, left guitar is a bit quiet compared to right, vox a bit quiet, can also tend to be a bit boomy in places.

Comments, constructive advice always much appreciated to a noob

For my tastes the guitars are a bit bright.

    Drums too.

I’d like to hear more weight in the drums. The kick to me could use more low end. The snare and kick could both some up in volume. For example at 2:26 the snare really pops out. The rest of the time its pretty buried.

I like the levels on everything else.

    That’s about all I can say. I’m pretty noob-ish too. 

    Agree.

Drums are to low a bit the back of the mix.

Every thing else seems to be OK.

A couple of quick comments....To me, the "space" feels wrong. The guitars are very washed in reverb so the chuggy-ness of them isn't really coming through, and the drums feel buried behind the guitars.

If this were a David Bowie song, I'd say it's probably about right, but as I think your aiming for more of a modern metal sound, I'd definitely ditch the reverb and try to get the overall balance between the drums / guitars closer to feel like they're in the same room.

My comments are subjective of course, if you love the reverb-d sound, then by all means keep it.

WAY too much high end fizz in the guitars, I really dislike gearbox for heavy guitar tones, try amplitube, or just do it the old fashion way and record through a decent amp

Awesome job for a first mix, though. Keep this kind of shit up, man, ha. But yeah, the guitars are too sharp without actually having any good definition. They should have more mid to them and less fuzz in that 8k area. Nice and heavy, though, ha.

    Cheers for the feedback all

I didnt have the option to record guitars via mic at the time, hence the all digital recording! =)

My next mixes will be done via mic though, so hoping to improve the guitars sound by then

I like it heavy! This is heavy. bring the drums especially the snare up, more low end in the bass drums. 80 Hz area. take some of the scoop out of the mids on the guitars and bomb the fizz. yeah i understand that when it comes to gearbox. Mic all the way

Cool song! Dig it! Drums could be more upfront. Wanna hear that kick a lil more. Seems to be the kinda song that would have some cool kick drum parts. I dunno if you need to reduce the verb on the rhythm guitars or not. I would bring the other elements up front first before the guitars IMO. Vocals could be more upfront too. Tighter verb, maybe even 0.5dB-1dB boost. The high end you have on your guitars is more an issue of personal taste. I don't find the high end in it distracting by any means but I prefer a more 6k LPF sound. Bass sound is a lil too bright for my tastes too.

Good job man! Tweaking the EQ curve during the mastering process could help some too. Really dig the song! Listening to it again. \m/(><)\m/

after listening to it louder in the phones i agree, leave the cymbals where they're at but raise the close mics up a tad on the kicks and snare

Yeah I had alot of trouble getting the mastering right, I feel it did change quite a bit of the track from the mix. Using Izotope Ozone, and was on a bit of a tight schedule to get it out.
Its my own band btw lol

I'm the bass player, and tend to slap bass on certain tracks, I feel it kicks more, apart from the ultra 200bpm tracks where I'm using a pick lol
So I brought it out more a bit in that song, whereas the other two songs I used a pick on most parts (I tend to change from slap, finger and pleck whilst playing).
I think bringing the bass out on the Mesa rather than using a plugin will make a huge difference on the tone, I've already experimented and it isnt as bright, but definatly alot punchier on the slap

Its all about experimenting and getting it right though, thanks for the feedback again dudes

We'll be re-recording this track later down the year with everything micced up rather than digital.
So should hopefully be interesting to see the results and see how it changes the track sound

I think thats the stronger mixed track out of the three though, I wasnt as pleased on the other two, especially with the vocals being a bit quiet. I didnt pick this up till later being a noob, but hey, it all comes with time and patience!

BTW you can check the other songs out in shit sqaushed form here : Destroyed Beyond Belief on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Videos
(Gotta plug your band whenever you can!!!)
