Default Awful Guitar Tone

I just recorded this band, and they had this god awful guitar tone. I suggested that they change it but they refused. I even told them that this would not sound good, but they still insisted that this was the tone they wanted. Should I try to fix it with EQ or should I just let their songs sound like crap?

I'd also just like to say that I have NEVER recording something this awful sounding. The sound you're hearing is not poor mic positioning or anything like that. This is a very accurate representation of their guitar tone. Its a telecaster through a metal muff through a solid state marshall with the built in reverb turned on

Personally I would think "what the hell is wrong with my amp?"
But really we need to hear the other instruments to give it a good bashing.

This always gets complicated. If the tone being captures is exactly what they are looking for, you can't argue (unless you want to defend your own name). To argue insists that there is some sort of objectivity in music and that leads down to all kinds of scary roads.

Then again, this done sucks! ha ha

If the band still thinks it is awesome, it is. (This tone could be useful for some spacey techo stuff). However, if they decide that they aren't happy with the gutiar tone, it may be time for them to rethink their tonal choices and maybe you can help them with that.

EQ will not fix this. If a guitar needs EQ it means I screwed up in tracking.

First of all my deepest sympathies. This is exactly why I would never want to do this recording thing for money, what a frustrating experience I'm sure. Just a thought though, maybe ask them what kind of guitar tone they are trying to achieve, from another band. Then A/B a comparison from that band's guitar sound to theirs and maybe they'll get the picture. Ask if you can submit their song to a mixing forum and let them see the critiques. Sometimes it just takes a few more peers to say "the song is good, but the guitar tone sucks" and maybe they'll change their mind. I honestly can't see this tone working at all except maybe with a boatload of efx as ambience way in the background0

this guitar tone is just a regular rhythm guitar. its not meant to have effects or anything. my friend suggested re-amping it. worth a shot?

Default Re-amping

If you have recorded the dry guitar on a separate track, by all means re-amp, if your gonna try to re-amp the noise you sent coming from the amp, forget it

Well, natural selection kicks in. You either adapt or you die. The more you do this, the better you get at not only the recording part, but also at dealing with people. I'm confident that if I was recording this dude I could have gotten him to use one of my amps.
