fHumble fHingaz - New Wavey Tune

This was a tune written by a friend's friend - an older guy who writes songs as a hobbie. My friend usually arranges & mixes them, but this time he gave a few to me to have a go at... He just gave me a live drum track, a single vocal & a piano track. At first hearing I thought it was rather corny, but I kind of got drawn in by the vocal that another friend had put on it for him... It conjured up a kind of '80's new wave Blondie / Cars vibe in my mind, so I went with it & layed down all the rest of the music myself... I really don't know if it's any great shakes as a song, but I sure had fun doing it - I'm keen to know your opinions, good or bad - let me have it!

I'm not sure what category it should be under - it's certainly nowhere near metal, but it's a little bit rock & a little bit electronic - All the sounds are "in the box" except the drums, electric guitars & vocals

I posted it on the main page, so you can link to it here:

Like meat to the wolves, I offer you my first song that's close to being done. First real project using Nuendo. Recorded the tracks and premixed in my Tascam 2488 and a couple of outboard gear. Thought I'd give it a shot refining it using a DAW. Wish I had some of them fancy plugins but working with what Nuendo's got for now.

I do have a couple of issues I am hoping to have resolved.

First up,
the kick. Wondering if there is enough 'sub' frequencies (mostly around 40-60k) to make it sound metal enough or too much making it sound like Wyclef's latest venture. :p

Last but not least,
and this may not be the dumbest question I ask yet, is there some fancy plugin out there that *removes* verb? Ended up with a noticeable verb from my stupid room when I doubled up the tracks. Noticeable on the verse tracks. The tiny verb-ed background vocal in the chorus is intentional btw. Worse case scenario, I'll have to re-track. *cough ahem cough*

Anyhow, time to try and settle down for bed. Nervousness is killin me. :p
Here's to another overcompressed metal mix.

Enter the wolves!!!

P.S. Edit: New mix. Brought bass up. Gotta manually tweak the initial 'boominess' of the bass when the track starts yet. Gonna quit for today. Pissing the wife off, running back and forth and playing the mix on every sound system in the house. Gawd I need a good set of cans or a new room!

So I posted the first song I had Mixed for this project in which I am volunteering my skills for a couple lady friends of mine, and it seemed to pass the criticism of the wonderful engineers here at the RecordingReview forum. Here's the next song I've finished tracking with mixing at about 99% complete. I'm super happy with how this one turned out! I love the dynamics and the layering - I feel like as the producer I was able to find a good balance between natural-sounding performances and studio magic compensating for my musicians' weaknesses.

As much I've listened to this (which has only been a day!), I can't hear anything that I'm immediately unhappy with, which doesn't mean jack squat - I know there has to be a couple things I may be missing! Please give me a good bashing.

I am not aware of a single track on this mixdown without compression of some sort. How does the song breath to you guys? Does it still have enough life despite me pushing the loudness to the limits? err limiter? :P

Hey everyone.

I posted 2 recordings I did for my band a while ago, which were basically my first ever recordings. This songs my second go, and I think its alot better than the last ones, but I could still use some advice on how to improve it.

Try not to be turned off by the drum intro. My drums are really bad, and my drummer is cheap and won't buy a new kit unfortunately, ha.

So ya bash away.

i've uploaded a 320kbps mp3, that can be streamed or downloaded:
(select the player, then hit play again)

Bat's Brew - N o W h e r e R a d i o . c o m (http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=2302&alid=-1)

or
Bat's Brew - N o W h e r e R a d i o . c o m (http://tiny.cc/XZgvY)

First Tracks, is a rock instrumental.
the idea is a pristine setting on a snow covered mountain, bluebird day, champagne powder, first tracks.

this is an unmastered first mix-
i used Har-Bal on this file, as an experiment, 1st time user.

i just put down a brand new bass line to this last night...
using my new 'baby bass'
i split a signal two ways from my sansamp bass di- one direct to the mic pre, with a bit of deep eq from the sansamp, and one to my mesa, set a little dirty on the clean channel, with a direct feed from the mesa to a palmer pdi-09, and then direct to a mic pre and convertor.

i'd like to have some comments on both the mix elements, and the eq overall.....
to get a feel for whether or not what i've done with this har-bal program is working or not.
thanks!

ps i attached a 128kbps mp3 as well....

So it's been awhile since i have posted a mix for bashing or feedback or whatever. This is a relatively new song I mixed for a project of mine.

It's a sort of an indie ballad of sorts for lack of a better term.

I would love feedback on the whole song but I am primarily interested in the feedback on the actual mix itself.

Thanks!

First Mix in Cubase - Ready for bashing :-)

Here's my first attempt of mixing with a DAW using plug-ins and a Line 6 POD for guitars. I did have all the great plugs outside of Cubase from Antares to Waves to get great sounds and cool effects right off the bat. Even though this is my first PC based mix, I have years of experience using analog consoles in night clubs mixing my band from the stage each night so this was very similar to me in many ways. Replace the racks and racks of gates, compressors, and effects for plug-ins and learn how to automate everything. I mic'd the drum kit as I always do on stage and simply overdubbed all the guitars and vocals. I mixed relentlessly playing every export of this mix on my studio monitors, with headphones, on my home system, car system, small radio, etc until I was happy... Feel free to rip this mix apart and bash as needed :-)

Thanks,

I've just done a rough mix of a song and would love some constructive feedback. It's the first song I've ever recorded and mixed (I only got Pro Tools about 4 months ago!), so it's kind of garbage, but I figure the only way to improve is to get some good advice. Any thoughts will be gratefully received. And my apologies in advance for the pain your ears may experience!!
