Studio monitors bass port plugging with sub

I heard/read that if your near field monitors have rear facing bass ports and you are using a seperate subwoofer, it is best to plug the bass ports on the monitors fully sealed.
Apparently you won't lose any bass performance and actually improve mid-bass response.

Does anyone know if this concept holds any water?

Hey, I'm new to the forums, i've read a lot but haven't found a suitable answer.

I don't do singing vocals, everything I record is voiceover material. I only started a few months back and have some generic equipment.

M-Audio Fast Track Pro,
ProTools M-Powered 8
Soundtrack Pro
MXL 990 (crap microphone)
Shure SM27

I'm looking to get a richer sound with my recordings. Right now they sound very flat and I've tried all types of EQing, but at this point I believe the issue is with the signal chain.

I've looked at going a few separate routes, add a preamp, new microphone such as a Heil PR-40, Rode NT1-A, or Shure SM7B. But before I spend anymore money on this hobby I wanted some constructive feedback from you all.

Hi guys,
I hope Im not going over old ground ( but I think I am!)
I was hoping you could help me with purchasing gear.

Im a singer songwriter and will be mostly recording acoustic guitar, vox and bass. The drums will nedd to come from software.

I already own Sonar Home Studio 7 ( I found it easy to get to grips with )
My PC ( going to purhcase soon ) will have Dual Core 2.8Ghz, 2 GB Ram ( will upgrade to 4 I think )with 500GB HD ( is that powerful enough ? )

Since I have no friends who record, Id like some advice on..
Mics - needs to record vox and guitar
Do I need a mixing desk? If so, why, as there is a virtual desk on Sonar.
Interfaces.

After the PC my budget is about $1000 Aus

I really appreciate the help guys,
Matt

Ripping a Vintage Audio Cassette

I ordered a vintage audio casette with some audio on it I want to sample. I thought it would be easy to find a cassette player with a line out jack, but the least expensive one I can find is too pricey. I don't expect to ever sample another audio casette, so I don't want to spend $50 on a tape deck.

I see a cheap casette player with a headphone jack, and I am wondering if I can run that to a line input jack without blowing anything up and maybe get some usable results. I've googled the heck out of this already, and I've seen some suggestions for building circuits to bring the headphone voltage down to line level, but I don't have that kind of skill, and I can't find a prebuilt circuit to buy. Meanwhile, some folks say just to keep the volume low on the casette player and it will be OK.

Does anyone here have advice for recording from a headphone jack? Are you aware of a cheap cassette player with a line out, or a cheap device I can buy that will convert headphone to line level?

Im just new to this whole recording at home thing, soo excuse how ametuer this post may sound. I've just bought the mbox mini 2, after good reviews and basically just to get my hand son the pro tools software with it, because i've bought this, i also want a new laptop to go with it, i've been offered a dell inspiron 1501, and was just wondering if anyone else is using this combination currently, or if there is any overly obvious reason why this won't/shouldn't work?

I would also love suggestions on what monitoring speakers and/or headphones i should consider?

Thanks in advance.

Clean mic pre or channel strip for vocals

All,

Im in search of a new clean mic pre/channel strip to compliment my Voxbox and BAE 1073. I mostly record hip hop and RNB vocals. I've been pointed in the direction of a Martech MSS-10, Millenia STT-1, GML 2020. I think I have enough outboard compressors so that would X out the STT-1 and 2020. Any other suggestions my recording review friends? As for mics I have a Brauner Phantom AE, Neumann U87 AI, and Flea47.

Thanks in advance!!:beerbangX:

Hey guys i need some advice on which setup im going to buy since i think either one of them would suit my needs, im leaning towards the PCI card +Mixer because i can have better control over the mic and maybe sounds better plus no so much lantecy issues, but the emu would be alright as well, i want to know if u guys think the sound quality differs very much between these two options

just in case i want to record my guitar amp and female vocals...and bass thru-line...but not at the same time

I need another mic or two for recording some of my piano/acoustic guitar songs. As of now I have an AKG Perception 220, and a Firebox interface. The AKG 220 sounds great with both my guitar, vocals and upright piano. However, I like to record vocals in the same take as piano or guitar. I was thinking I could buy a pair of SM57s for the piano, and use my AKG 220 for vocals. Any better suggestions?
