Recording psychiatric diagnosis

The American Psychiatric Association has just...

The American Psychiatric Association has just published the fuifth guide for psychiatrists and it's come up with some bozoomas!!

Apparently, if you have a tendency to keep a lot of junk, you may get a psychiatrist telling you you have "a hoarding disorder".

If you're a little forgetful, you may be suffering from "a mild neurocognitive disorder."

Temper tantrums become disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) and grief becomes major depressive disorder (MDD). And if you overeat sometimes, or often, you may be suffering from "binge eating disorder" (BED.

Nope, I'm not making these up.

But I wondered if anyone here suffers from any recording related disorders which the AMA missed.

I know I suffer from excessive eq tweaking (EET). And I can be accused of binge vocal tracking which I call Verbosity disorder.

C'mon guys, you must have some. Feel safe to share here, you're among friends.

Hi guys, this is my first bashing, so be gentle!...

Hi guys, this is my first bashing, so be gentle! :) Just kidding. bash away, I need the feedback.

All instruments performed by me. I'm obviously a little shaky on the guitars and vocals, but I did my best. I'm mostly interested in the mixing aspect.

I'm using Submersible Drumcore 3 Free, but with live cymbals and hihat. I can't get used to that darn electronic hihat controller!

The cymbals sound a little dull and muddy, maybe because I'm using my only mic, an SM57. Same with the acoustic guitar. I want to upgrade my mic arsenal soon, but for now that's all I have. I tried to un-muddy them with EQ, but that can only do so much, and I'm really not that skilled with it.

I struggled with the reverb (as I think all beginners do), so I just used a Cubase preset called Drum Spread on everything. I tried to recreate that 60s mod reverb flood sound, but I was afraid to go too overboard. Feedback on that will be much appreciated.

Oh yeah, and there's no solo. If anyone wants to do a solo and send it to me, I'll plug it in. ;)

Got a scratch vocal down on this one, and looking...

Got a scratch vocal down on this one, and looking for opinions on arrangement and mix. Singer was getting over a cold for this so tuning was a little funky in places, and sounds a little coldy. I think I would like a little less theatrical vibrato from him, and might think about changing the key to make it a little less heavy and get more power from the voice.

It somehow seems a little one dimensional to me, but I'm not sure what it needs - possibly more action/variety in the drums or electric guitar? What would you do to it? Maybe it just needs a little more dynamics (less compression).

Sorry for the length...

The absolute basics of modern computer recording - help please?

Hi, and thanks for looking; I'm hoping there's...

Hi, and thanks for looking; I'm hoping there's someone out there patient enough to help an old-timer into the modern world!

My ancient setup of some 25 years comprises my faithful old Atari ST, AKAI DR16 (Hard Disc Recorder), Yamaha O2R desk, Roland XP80 keys for my main MIDI input, and various MIDI rackmount effects - Vintage Keys/Korg M1R, Roland TD8 Drums etc.

So, my question is - can somebody please lay me out a ground-up list of what I would need to get into the modern world of computer recording?
Ideally, and from what I have managed to pick up I would like to go the Apple Mac route using Logic, but I have no idea what else I would need regarding cables and auxillery equipment to get the system up and running. I'm told I would also need a AD/DA unit, but I have no idea which one to go for, let alone what cables etc I will need to connnect the whole lot together (and how) - I am familiar with the names Firewire etc, but have no idea what it is, or even if this is what I need to connect this lot together.
So, this is why I'm asking for a 'ground-up' list - in layman's terms please!

Computer wise, and from what I have read, people seem to favour the Macbook Pro over the iMac, but the iMac appears to comes complete with a larger monitor, which is something I would prefer as the old eyes aren't what they were, But, this seems to be out-voted by most in favour of the Macbook Pro, as it (apparently) has more comprehensive outputs - someone even suggested you can connnect an additional (and larger) monitor to this, which would be ideal in my case.

I have no idea what the other 'useful' outputs on the Macbook Pro could be, but ideally I would like to be able to transfer my old recordings from the AKAI hard-disc recorder and the Atari files onto the new system (via Logoc) - I believe Logic is able to read the old Atari (floppy disc) files, so this is my reason for chosing Logic over ProTools.
So, could I do this with this system - connected in some way to my existing setup???

Ok, that's about it, I hope that's not too confusing and someone can help!
With thanks,
Pete
:beerbangX:

Sorry Admin, I think I may have posted this in the wrong section... please move to Computer Recoding Basics, or wherever it should be if you think right.
Thanks.

Everybody, here's a tune, Everybody... :D

I...

Everybody, here's a tune, Everybody... :D

I thought up the first few lines of this song while traveling on the city's metro, looking at the people around me. Life gives us such great inspiration sometimes. :epiphany

'After' the day's work was done in the home-studio, I recorded a guitar motif over some fingerpicked guitar chords and sung them first few lines out. Hmmmm, sounded sweet, sounded promising. Some friends came over later for some beers and I played them my day's work in the studio and then this little tune-idea. "Whoa dude!!! That sounds better than what you made all day man, it's sweet". Dunno whether it was the beers talking :beerbangX: ... but I did realize I was onto something.

The second day I did my homework and wrote some more lyrics, penned a chorus and improvised a guitar solo to counterbalance the main guitar motif. Then came the bassline, loved tracking it. Oh, and this was the 'day's work this time. Weaved in some children playing in the park at evening in the intro and then some guitar overdubs and bounced away...

I like it, does Everybody on here like it too ?!

Does it sound sweet, charming, lovey-dovey ?

Is it mixed right ? Any performance issues that can be corrected ?

Does it sound like a coherent song ? What more can I do to make sure Everybody likes it when I release it ?

C'mon, Everybody... Help me make this song better. :)

thanks,

Hey guys

I've been using Edirol UA4FX for Six years and been recording everything at 44.1, 16bit. i recently had a problem with this card because it had a huge delay and did not want to which the monitor off, from the bottom side of the card. i re-installed the drivers and it worked fine but i started having BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH. i uninstalled the driver again and now am still thinking on what to do next. while i was reading staff about this card on the net i realized that it had an option of recording at higher quality than the 16bit. I dont know how to go about tuning in into this option.

Above i have 2 things that i would like to get help on, 1. The blue screen of death, 2. Recording on 24bit or higher to get quality.

I am using Windows 7 64bit.

I have absolutely no idea how we'd go about that.

Does anyone do that where they live? Or can we do it on here?

Would love to know poeple's thoughts about how we get more folks interested in this wonderful music/mixing/mastering/mucking about business.

Does anyone on the forum make use of spectral editing?

I had it available to me for years (Samplitude 9 / 11 ) and didn't realise.

But wow. Now I can celan out those clicks and scuffs that REALLY annoy. You know the type of thing: you've recordfed a brilliant guitar instrumental take (acoustic say) and it's brilliant. Except that at one of the vital moves in the tune, you sracped the nmeck with something. or the mic picked up the movement against your shirt. And that wrecks it.

Not anymore, pull out the spctral editor, find the scrape, bang, click whatever, and whoosh, it's gone.

Sorry. I LOVE it. I have Samplitude 11 where you ahve to open up a separate window to do the editing, but in 12, they've made it possible to do the editing in the timeline of the arranegement window.

I don't even know what VST epctral editing plugs ins there are out there.

Sounds to me from what I read like Windows 8 has flopped and Microsoft are back tracking on what they started with it.

I hear they are doing an "update" in which you can set the system to boot to the desktop missing out the new tiled interface altogether.

And on the tiled interface, I hear they're bringing back the start button.

I don't have it yet, quite happy with Windows 7.

Anyone have any thoughts on whether this is just a Microsoft back track or a genuine upgrade??

I'm puzzled. Read an internet piece last night...

I'm puzzled. Read an internet piece last night (which I can't now find because my history/cache is wiped everytime I close down) about how DAW companies are "ripping off" folks with supposed upgrades which do litle to advance the basic software.

I read it because that view chimes with mine. Is that the case though.

It seems to me from reading SoS and internet sites that many upgrades are just tweaks to the existing gear.

It makes sense for the comapnies, if, every time they change an interface slightly, they call it an upgrade and charge everyone to get it.

But I'd prefer to wait for a major shift before I yupgrade.

So I had Samplitude 9 for years. But when 11 came out, there were advances I wanted / even needed.

So how do other Daws go about this. Are you being ripped off, or is it a fair deal?
