  1. Audio Skeptics Society T-Shirts

    by , 07-05-2011 at 11:44 AM
After fHumble fHingaz posted his blind test and watching this AWESOME video by Ethan Winer I'm all excited about kicking off the Audio Skeptics Society.

Yes, the acronym is ASS. That's no accident.

You can find out more about the Audio Skeptics Society. You must post 3 blind tests to be in the club. You'll get a merit badge and I'm thinking about printing up some t-shirts for it. Here's a prototype:

    What do you think?

  2. Diminishing Returns: When to draw the line.

    by , 07-02-2011 at 10:38 PM
I am revisiting my thread on diminishing returns and the illness some of us face chasing expensive equipment that gives us smaller improvements at a large cost. I felt it should be posted on here.

I know there are plenty of people out there who go down this road.

Pro Audio companies are spoon-feeding consumers into thinking their older equipment just isn't good enough anymore. You need all the new things that manipulate frequencies that humans cannot even hear. ...

  3. Tried everything I normally wouldn't in a session.

    by , 07-01-2011 at 09:28 AM
I was recording a band (sort of) the last 2 nights and we decided on our philosophy early on. We would try everything we don't usually do. I have recorded these guys before but they had a friend that needed a band.

-We decided to learn the songs as we recorded them live off the floor.
-We chose instruments, amps and drums that were the opposite of our instincts.
-The guitarist that records with me a fair bit is a moderate drummer so he played drums.
    -I let ...

  5. When the big boys get it wrong.

    by , 06-27-2011 at 11:51 PM
I just completed the most major 2 week marathon I've ever done. Hosting 20 hours of rehearsals and 12 hours of concerts in my studio in week one, doing sound for major artists for the next 2 days, opening for the head lining act at the end of the week while being vice-chair for a festival that 5000 people attended.

The point o this blog is not to vent about my crazy work load but to give a report of the experience I had while doing sound side by side with a major production company. ...

  6. Can You Hear The Difference?

    by , 06-27-2011 at 10:11 AM
fHumble fHingaz came up with an awesome little shootout. What's awesome about it is he's not telling you what to listen for. You know what that means? It means that all the bias you have about sample rates, bit depth, analog compression, and the other things we fight about is out the window.

I'm excited about this double-blind business because it goes along with what this site has always been about from the beginning. The idea is to make REAL improvements to our recordings and ...
  7. So I took my first stab at Mid-Side recording

    by , 06-20-2011 at 09:18 PM
    Mid/Side recording

An useful way for representing stereo sound is the standard Left/Right that we're all familiar with. Mid/Side is another way, and it can be useful in all sorts of ways. The easiest way to explain it is to describe how to convert a left right signal into mid/side and back.

So, when playing a sound, and you want it to sound like it's coming from the middle of two speakers, you play the exact same signal in both speakers. To get the "mid" ...

  8. TC Electronic SCF vs Eventide H3000 - Chorus

    by , 06-13-2011 at 09:46 AM
I've been trading emails with Jerry Wetzel and he's had too much good info to hide. This modulation business has peaked my interest here lately so this was right up my alley.

    Hey Brandon;
The TC has plenty of headroom for use at modest line level apps, for example, connection to a console channel insert. Over the years, I've been using the Shure A95UF and connecting my mic to that and then into the TC or other "guitar-type" effects with much success. I bought the

  9. USB and Firewire Converters A/D

    by , 06-09-2011 at 03:34 AM
I notice pops and clicks in the last 3 converters I've used (US-800 Tascam, Motu 828 MkII, Tascam FW-1082). I'm going to guess (long shot perhaps). Power supply instability issues. I've recorded 6 tracks simultaneously recently (with the US-800 at 96khz), and noticed a trend across all 6 tracks. All 6 tracks had a "pop" or "click" sound (zooming in on the wave form clearly shows data got lost or damaged momentarily) Logic tells me that there's an issue outside of the conversion ...

  10. How to sum in analog and retain full daw automation and instant recall.

    by , 06-08-2011 at 11:45 PM
Analog is a total pain without automation and instant recall and not worth the trade off for the supposed benefit in sound. When I compare my perceived benefit in sound vs. my ability to go back quickly and tweak a couple things and/or switch to a different song and come back when I need to if it is not working. I can tell you that there is no contest I must have automation and almost instant total recall.

    My Bias

I firmly do not believe that summing does anything ...

  11. UAD Training – Sam Ash New York City, June 23rd

    by , 06-03-2011 at 09:33 AM
The UAD guys (who've graciously sponsored the last two mixing contests with a total of 4 UAD-2 Quads) have asked me to toss up a quick blog.

Universal Audio is throwing a training seminar at Sam Ash in Manhattan.

The training will be hosted by Bruce MacPherson of Universal Audio with guest speaker Ryan West, 4 time grammy nominated mixing engineer. Ryan has mixed Eminem and Kanye West to name a few.

    Location: 156 W 48th street, Manhattan New York ...

  12. Adventures of Upgrading from core2duo...

    by , 05-30-2011 at 07:10 AM
Firstly let me just say, I am totally self taught when it comes to pc system building BUT I do not consider myself a 'know it all'. I just know what I need to know or had to learn to get stuff done.

So its been 5 years or so since I built my old system which was a core2duo e6600 Intel cpu PC.
I have upgraded my graphics cards several times since the first build and I currently have a XFX hd4890 (ATI).

Its come to that point where applications are taking more ...

  13. Running F.O.H and Recording Live in a Concert Hall Built for 700 people...Awesome!

    by , 05-29-2011 at 10:16 PM
I had the honor of being the first to run the front of house system in the new cultural centre in my area. It is a multi-million dollar facility with decent acoustics and professionally treated. The house rig is a really detailed set of nexo line arrays and subs for F.O.H. speakers. The console is a Soundcraft LX7II. They had some DBX Eq for F.O.H and for monitors.

It is not a lot of stuff because they are just getting going but it is a good start. The room is great for not ...

  14. When Vocal EQ Drives Me Nuts

    by , 05-26-2011 at 02:17 AM
I've got this little problem. I'm always wondering if the problems I experience SHOULD be happening. For example, on one day with one song I may record a singer using X chain and say, “Wow! That needs nothing. I'm cool with that!”. The very next day on a different song I may say, “I'd rather drink bleach or watch daytime talk shows than use that sound. This sounds terrible!”

This is not me losing my mind. I've gotten where my tastes seem to be fairly consistent. There's ...
