  1. That Big Studio Sound: Part II

    by , 12-19-2012 at 08:56 PM
From what I've learned over the past year, I know that placement and balance along with proper filtering is what really makes up the majority of a good sounding mix. Effects are there for enhancement purposes and are indeed very important.. but not my biggest hurdle.

Here is pretty much everyone's biggest hurdle whether they realize it or not: EQ

Without filtering, volume and clarity are not often found. Without proper low end filtering, everything is usually muddy ...
  2. Getting That BIG STUDIO SOUND: Part 1

    by , 12-12-2012 at 08:36 PM
I thought I'd take some actual time and respond to someone's simple, yet HUGE, question. This is an actual answer that could steer them in the right direction.

    I know... Crazy Huh?

    Here's the big popper:
Any tips on getting that big studio sound ?

Impossible to answer in one sentence and actually give someone credible advice.. but we all know that, right?

    Define "Big Studio Sound"...

Is that the sound where ...

  3. When a Good mix goes BAD.

    by , 03-06-2012 at 03:39 PM
We all struggle in one way or another, and we also get caught up in things that, when it's over and done with, we've regretted. We also have our own personalities that can trigger some of these things that can affect our performance when mixing in either a good way or a bad way. As a matter of fact, it's our own personal level of incompetence that makes us who we are as current or future musicians\engineers\producers.

  4. "That's how they get ya"

This isn't just an idiotic rant about my loathing of large food product companies.... maybe you'll get something out of this but probably not. I am ready to fall asleep but wanted to make this point in the odd way that I did. I will be thrilled if even one of you understands what I am saying.

My wife grabs cranberry juice at the store sometimes..in the juice aisle next to all the OTHER 100% JUICE PRODUCTS.

  5. Prioritize your investments!

    by , 12-03-2011 at 05:34 PM
I am going to make this as quick and simple as I possibly can because you can easily run out of money and still not be satisfied with anything you are creating in your musical world.

Let's start with a little scientific, psychological perspective.

Read, out loud to yourself, the definition of a desire followed by the definition of a need. Ok folks, here's the drill... when I say need, I want you all to say it with me. When I say desire, I want you all to say it with ...

  6. Getting a "Wider" mix. It's not an effect, its EQ technique.

    by , 08-14-2011 at 11:01 PM
Well, it's good to make sure all tracks sound great by themselves.. but it has to be a breed of great that can tolerate the other great tracks blending with it without losing its audible goodness that you heard with the solo button on. That's why it is always important to dive in and out of the solo button when configuring an individual track, that way you hear it within the context of the entire mix. If you spend too long with the solo button on, you may realize you made a mistake when you have

  7. Hardware Faders

    by , 07-05-2011 at 09:56 PM
I checked out the thread: Engineers say moving faders too far from 0db effects sound. Are these guys on crack?

So I did a test, and maybe you should too, of the difference in static HISS of normalized recordings of the same clip recording a mixer at different master fader positions. I didn't get anything out of my polls - it was a disaster - so I encourage you to do the same test I did. I recorded a quick guitar clip onto ...

  8. Diminishing Returns: When to draw the line.

    by , 07-02-2011 at 10:38 PM
I am revisiting my thread on diminishing returns and the illness some of us face chasing expensive equipment that gives us smaller improvements at a large cost. I felt it should be posted on here.

I know there are plenty of people out there who go down this road.

Pro Audio companies are spoon-feeding consumers into thinking their older equipment just isn't good enough anymore. You need all the new things that manipulate frequencies that humans cannot even hear. ...
