Acoustically.

Seriously. Anything I thought I knew about acoustics, mind****ed it into oblivion.

If you've seen it, discuss, if not, watch it, then discuss.

I mean wow, it complicates my thoughts on acoustics, clarifies what I already knew, and educates my on what I didn't know, all at once!

This guy is a freaking genius of epic proportions and deserves a Nobel Peace prize. Big ups

Great video! However I thing that Bob would rather have the Nobel Pizza Prize with a few beers instead.

Haha he does strike me as the kind of guy you could chill and have a pizza and beer with, which is a vibe I don't get from the likes of Winer et al.

Which is no offence to that type of acoustician/person, I just think I prefer this guy's overall personality to the labcoat type considering his profession.

Don't put down Ethan too much. I know him personally. He has his points but is a little dry. Maybe a few beers could help him. LOL!

There's a button in the lower right hand corner that says "You Tube" Just click that and it takes you to the original video on You Tube.

Oh, Ethan may seem "sciency", but every "sciency" person I know puts me to shame at the bar. Don't let that stellar physique fool you.

I remember watching this video a while back and not having any life changing epiphanies. I'm well-read on this topic so I generally don't pick up too many life changing epiphanies anymore, unfortunately. There were a few times where I thought I was about to hear something new and then Pensado would interrupt (an unfortunate byproduct of his otherwise pleasant personality).

So what were the life changers on this one?

Well, what I gathered from it was that:

A: speaker placement is a way bigger deal than most people think.
B: even the Pros can't tune a room by ear.
C: there are no hard and fast rules, which I know is a paradox.
D: i need an acoustician like I need an accountant; I wish I could do all my accounting by myself, but in reality, paying someone who knows their shit will save me money in the long run (especially where taxes are concerned!).

And Dave is playing devils advocate for the viewers that aren't as well read as the likes of you or Ken J. he's in he media industry with his show and even if the content is technical, he still needs to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Unfortunately that is usually at the expense of missing some useful information.

I actually think Herb can be worse than Dave. He always wants to cut to batters box or q and a right where the conversation is getting good! Or be will randomly ask a question that he has been holding onto for the whole show and it will be unrelated to what they are actually taking about.

Well... All Herb did was give some basic highlights. There is so much more to making a room right. It can't be explained in an hour of video.

I realize it's a show for everyone. I'm cool with that. That's why they make books that most people wouldn't dare reading. I just hate the tease factor. When I know I'm about to hear something BIG and NEW and it gets circumvented, I go, "DAMN IT!".

They clearly have some kind of time limit (although many shows go well over an hour). I understand the need to have a format for the show. It does stink when they are about to answer the million dollar question and THAT gets cut.

I timed 3 or 4 episodes. The average intro was about 4:30 seconds. They were talking about going fishing that week or that they had a busy week or whatever. I know why they do that. It makes them seem like casual, normal guys. Most intelligent people want to appear casual on the web. However, Dave has so much personality that it all comes out naturally in the show anyway. To me, it just seems like redundant filler on a show that, at times, is overflowing with CRITICAL info. I'd much rather see them knock that down the intro to about 30 seconds and get right with it with ITL or whatever.

Dave does this to help relax the person watching the show. Then if you really look at it, You and I do the same thing. So does everyone else. Working in pro recording or any other field when the casual talk starts, it's part of a normal everyday thing. How much time does any person talk about what they did out side of work with coworkers at work on the clock. All Dave is doing is setting the mood for the show. His idea seems to be relax, kick back and take in the information. When a person keeps the discussion light, information is passed easier to the listener. Simple psychology.

I get it. It's just an epic waste in my opinion. Today we have Joe Chiccarelli or JJ Puige, engineers with more knowledge than the Space Shuttle. Let's talk about my fishing trip for 10% of the show.

Ultimately, this is a down side of the path of I've chosen in life. I gave up relaxing. I gave up chatting with coworkers. When you have 75 things to do and only enough time for 18 of them, when your time gets chewed up on small talk, it makes you nervous. It's much like sitting in traffic when you had somewhere REALLY important to be 5 minutes ago. You start tapping the steering wheel really fast saying, "Come on! Come on! Come on!".

I've read a few books on presentation. The idea is to suck people in with what they are gonna see soon to bait n hook 'em. Then you immediately switch to something else. This is why Dan Rather or whoever the new guy is doesn't talk about his fishing trip. Instead, the voiceover guys says, "World In Crisis: Your kids may die today". Then they say, "But first" and then they say whatever bs filler they've got.

This is a problem with Youtube in general. You need to know how to consolidate MIDI tracks in an unfamiliar DAW and you have to listen to a guy say, "Welcome to the show." for 5 minutes. I don't need a friend. I need solutions to my problems.

Either way, Pensado has enough personality to not need to artificially inject "Personality Time" into a show about audio recording. That's my official stance. His setting the mood just makes me nervous as hell.

Now you know why I sold my studio and started teaching this stuff. No business worries, no deadlines, NO STRESS! Every studio owner I know goes through the same things as you are doing and I got away from. You're at a point where all you want is the information. That's part of the stress part in your life right now. I was there at one point too.

That's probably fair. All I really want is solutions to my problems. There's a tease factor when people with EPIC levels of skill are calmly sitting around saying, "Well, Herb, I hate a busy week this week." (Yes, we know, Dave. You say that every week.)

But yeah, it is safe to say I'm in the stress phase of my life.

Well they say... That's show biz! I know it doesn't answer your questions. What matters most is taking care of yourself. If you don't have your health, nothing else matters in business.

Not just me then . It also kills me when I'm trying to find the syntax of a command to fix something in Windows that just broke and the help file is a F*^*$*g video instead of 2 lines of text!
