How Bad Do You Want Success

Another metaphysical type of blog from me, I figure I'd put another one up and if Brandon gets tired of them he'll tell me lol. This one came directly off my site.
Original blog

A story frequently told by guru’s to show people the kind of desire they need to have in order to achieve success is as follows:

A boy walks up to an old successful philosopher and says, “I wish to have success like you.”

So the old man tells him to meet him at the lake early the next morning and he will impart all of the wisdom that the boy needs to be successful.

The boy wakes the next morning very excited about the prospect of learning from such a wise and successful man. He hurries down to the lake to find the old man meditating waist deep in the water. He stares at him and after a period of time the man motions for the bow to join him. The boy quickly undresses and runs into the lake to meet the old man.

As soon as the boy got within arms distance to the old man the old man grabbed him and shoved him under the water. The boy floundered, splashed and fought but could not overpower the man to return to his feet. They struggled against each other for about 20 seconds before the man let the boy up slightly asking him a simple question before pushing the boy back under the water.

The question was: “Do you want air?”

The boy shook his head frantically yes as he again started to fight for air, after about 25 more seconds the man lifted the boy up and asked him another question before shoving him back in the water. The question was, “How bad do you want air, what are you willing to do to get it?”

This time the man held the boy underwater for 30 more seconds before he let go of the boy and the boy burst through the water furious, crying, humiliated, and glaring at the man with an intense feeling of disgust. The man went back to his meditation without looking at the boy at all and said very calmly to him, “When you need success the way you need air, you shall have it.”

The boy left there that day with 3 conclusions:

1. He would never underestimate the strength of an old man again;

2. He developed an intense fear of open water and swimming with others;

3. Probably more important than all the rest, he knew how bad he had to want it. He found out what he would do to get something he wanted.

He left the lake and became one of the most successful people of his time.

Ask yourself how bad do you want it, what would you do to get it, what is it about it that appeals to you? Dig deep for the answers to these questions, and know that when you truly want something with all your mind and heart and are willing to lay it on the line to go get it, even if you don’t achieve the person you become over the journey is worth it.

    A couple thousand years later,
This jazz trumpet player was strapped for cash.
So he starts giving lessons to everybody. And this jazz cat was mean on the trumpet. The whole city knew his name, Charlie. He could play in the park and on the street corner and in his home whenever he wanted. He was so good no-body would show him the dis-respect of not appreciating his art.
So he gets a gig, tooo somebody, a family oooh I don't remember them too well. Anyways this familys' got a little 12 year old kid and they figured it'd be good for their brat to learn some real trumpet playing.
So good ol Chuck shows up nice and happy to the pupils home one day playing his marry old trumpet all the way there. Just to tell the kid "Meet me at the lake, 8:30 in the morning".
The lil rug-rat shows up, with his trumpet, and he sits around the lake for a lil, it couldn-a been more than 10 minutes. Charlie comes smoking his pipe N tells the boy to get in the boat and row row out.....Now he made that poor boy row too the middle of the lake.
Jusst to play his trumpet and learn a thing or two. So before the kid can even ask what's going on Chuck shows this kid what the trumpets all about. Then, then he has the nerve to put his trumpet in the lake and play for them fish. He tells the rug-rat to do the same thing ya dig, and the kids let out some squiiks and some squels but and he plays, but then when he put his trumpet in the water. That boy couldn't hit one note. Chuck told him to just stop trying to play in the water after a good 10-20 minutes.
He just gone told the boy, "Your first lesson is, to never trust your teachers."
I dig the metaphor. But I saw it comming from the great wall of china.

the old chinese dude probably didnt have to go to work to pay the mortgage in a job he hates, look after his sick wife, try and balance the bills, try and balance whats left of a social life loose his driving licence and have numerous ccj`s.... if he did he`d be a blues player :-)

and what was he doing getting young boys to strip off in the lake with him? that in itself is very strange.
i bet he lived alone and had cats.

jokes aside, i see what your trying to preach, but in the modern world i think its more simple, i`m all for philosohy and prefer `the glass is half full` attitude to life.
but sometimes in music it really is a case of who you know or right place right time.

for me people are always rtying to be `the best` or to own `the newest, shinyest thing` to `be rich`.well BOLLOX

stop trying to be what your not, the world is a tough enough place , have your dreams and do the best to acchieve them, put in as much effort and dedication as you can, there will be many many knockbacks, but in the end you get what you put in.

dont winge and say its not fair, life isnt. it take hard graft to get anywhere in life. but make sure when u get there that its really where you want to be, as mney, fame , sucess are nothing if you aren`t happy inside.

if you allways do what you`ve allways done, you`ll allways get what youv`e allways gotten!

to me, waking early each morning and giving myself time to feed my koi carp with the sun slowly rising, listening to the birds tweeting before i face `the day` is all important for me,
we al come from mother earth, learn to respect her simple things and you wil reep her rewards, disrespect her at your peril.

    peace to all.

oh, and i find beer helps :-)

I think the proverb is more along the lines of what are you willing to do to be the best then it is about what you think or how you feel. But it is a story to be interpreted based off the life experiences of the reader. Thanks for your comment

Well the kiddies trying their best usually have enough energy to be pointed in the right direction and are rather helpful.

The practical side of it, is that to achieve success - in addition to an obsessive single-minded pursuit of a goal and taking risks - you usually have to be willing to give up some things in your life that might hold you back from the goal. We all fill up our lives with habits and commitments, which take time and energy. So to "make room" for a new goal or purpose, and you should look at "cleansing" out some old unnecessary things that distract from or block the journey. Call it "Spring Cleaning" if if you like.

A "famous" photographer gave a stunning exhibition in a prestigious NYC private showing, and the hostess walked up to him and said. "fantastic work – i am buying several: you must have a wonderful camera".
Complimenting the hors d'oeuvres, the Champagne, the entrées, the artist replied, "Fantastic food; you must have an excellent stove."

This sounds like one of those speeches you hear on some movie about high school sports. Then you realize the guy giving the speech makes his living off being a high school football coach and possibly teaching an english class so that he can keep his coaching position. Hmmm.

If there is anything I want to teach my kids about success, it's that if you have to give something so much attention that it occupies your every thought, you are probably missing out on a massive list of other more important things.
