  1. Movies and Music go together like Eggs and Toast

    by , 05-06-2013 at 12:13 PM
We learn through our recording process to use our ears, close our eyes, don't look at the levels, and such, but there are times when the senses come together in goosebump inducing glory.

I personally strive for "looseness" in my recordings, that's just my preference.

Here's some examples that make me go crazy with excitement :

    * when Marty Mcfly gets on stage in "Back to the futue" and you hear him plug in to the amp, you can hear ...
  2. Philosophy- what are you gonna do with your life ?

    by , 05-04-2013 at 06:36 PM
I've found that a lot of recording artists/ producers are caught up in their own tidepools and never find a way out.

We all seem to evolve in a similar way down the path to better recordings, but focus on things that only improve our craft a tiny bit.

This Recording Review website is great at not focusing on gear. That's a big hurdle to overcome when we don't get the results we want from our gear, we blame the gear itself.

I applaud the effort and focus ...

Here is the link to the mix I am discussing: http://forum.recordingreview.com/f14...ble-mix-45029/

Ok, so here we are at the third installment of this odyssey - I hope it has been somewhat informative & entertaining.

  4. In the box "Sounds"

    by , 04-04-2012 at 04:09 PM
Okay, so I don’t exactly know what I’m doing here. I just want to help out, and I’m trying to figure out my own way. I would like to talk about mixing ITB and SOUNDS. So I’m just going to type stream-of-consciousness and hope that that will get the points I wanted to address across. The veterans here will probably know about some of the things I will cover. This isn’t really geared toward them. This is for people mixing in the box who are trying to get their mixes to translate better. But I would ...

The second installment about the mix of the track linked above; Here is the first part if you missed it: http://forum.recordingreview.com/blogs/fhumble-fhingaz/153-mixing-clockwork-clown-fhumbling-journey-part-1-big-idea.html

In my last entry, I mentioned how I felt the thing that what "Clockwork Clown" needed was a bit of a "groove injection"... Let me explain what I mean:

    As M24P ...

  6. Mixing Clockwork Clown - A fHumbling Journey - Part 1 - "The Big Idea"

    by , 04-03-2012 at 09:29 AM
Here is the link to the mix I am discussing: http://forum.recordingreview.com/f14...ble-mix-45029/

So... how to start... how to start...HOW TO START???

What do you do to start a mix? "That's easy", you say: "Just import the tracks into your DAW & pull up the (virtual) faders - start mixing - Duh!" Well, most who've done it know it's not that easy.
Ever heard anyone say "Get a clue!"? The fact is, unless ...

  7. Rode NTG-2 Shotgun Microphone and Movie Scoring

    by , 03-06-2012 at 03:23 PM
I wrote this last July and never posted it.

This weekend was the annual 48 Hour Film festival. The idea is you have 48 hours to make a movie 7 minutes or less starting from scratch. You don't know the genre, required props, or required character names beforehand. At 7:00pm on a Friday night there is a huge rush to toss together a story, locations, cast, etc.

I brought out my sorta-portable recording rig (which isn't) and setup in a spare bedroom (probably ...
  8. Let's use military experience in mixing (part II) - search and destroy!

    by , 01-19-2012 at 09:48 PM
    Good day everybody!

Preamble: On Monday I suddenly felt great interest in Vietnam War. No problemo, some articles on wikipedia, some articles outside wikipedia. But it was still not enough. I download some documentary movies and watched them. In the end of every movie voice behind told that lessons of this war must be learned. I decided that 50.000 US + more than 1.000.000 Vietnamese lives cannot be spend for nothing.

Strategy and tactic: US solders use tactic named ...

  9. How I Won ADK Metal Mayhem

    by , 12-18-2011 at 12:03 PM
So here is my blog in which I'll try to describe the best way possible how I did my entry for the ADK Metal Mayhem contest.

Songwritting: I downloaded provided files & downloaded the mix sample. Mix sample was done by Metaltyme, who also provided the raw tracks. For a few days I've been listening to the sample while doing some other work, relaxing etc.. until my subconsciousness took that piece for it's own. When I reached the creative state of mind, I picked up my guitar and ...

  10. Offering to record bands, the repercussions.

    by , 10-13-2011 at 10:08 PM
So I'm a 22 year old kid trying to become the next big thing in music. Just like that guy who did Anvil's last album or Uncle Bob.

What happened now to me is, I offered to some musicians I found in a pub the chance to record some good songs. 6 to count them. Everything seemed perfect, simple, and most importantly non-intrusive.

The story begins with 'Rain Dogs' a Tom Waits cover band playing in a local band, just after I came back from a town where I spent a few ...

  11. The Significance of Bumping

    by , 10-10-2011 at 02:35 PM
The correct spelling is probably bumpin' or bumpN or something like that. I'm white. I look white. I dance white. I'm calling it bumpING.

Once upon a time I was into to the rather progressive stuff and rarely listened to a song that was shorter than 8 minutes. I took the cerebral side to the music I made and recorded very seriously and avoided anything that wasn't up to “my standards”. I went through the same thing with movies. If the movie was something the “popcorn crowd” ...
  12. Explaining Recording To Your Girlfriend 101

    by , 05-04-2011 at 08:35 PM
"Well, to overly simplify a long and very complicated story, you sing and play into mics. Now those mics plug into a magic box, and the magic box plugs into a computer. And someone sits at the computer while the person is singing or playing and tells the magic box what to do and how to do it. The computer records the sounds coming from the magic box, which come from the microphones. Does that make sense?"

I know we've ALL been there haha...that was my most recent attempt. ...

  13. Thinking about joining the Dark Side

    by , 04-29-2011 at 11:03 PM
I haven't used a Mac since 1999 till the other day my friend I'm working with on some visual arts brings hers. Of course, it's second hand, and full of problems, not helping my pre-conception of Mac's. Aren't they supposed to "just work" ? I have yet to use one that runs rapidly AND reliably. In my experience, the pc "Blue Screen of Death" got nothing on the "Mac Freeze"

I was also amazed that my previous working knowledge of the Mac OS was of ABSOLUTELY ...
  14. Why Fireman Don't Make Good Recording Guys

    by , 04-12-2011 at 10:02 AM
There's never enough time in the day for me. I try to fill each and every second with something that is going to get me more work completed or give me knowledge.

Here lately I've noticed time slipping by faster than ever before. I think part of it is me turning 31 in a month. The year is past 1/3 over so I was reflecting on what I had completed this year. For a guy who works as long of hours as I do, the list of big things I had achieved in 2011 was a little disappointing. ...

  15. Intel's new Light Peak/Thunderbolt tech.

    by , 03-28-2011 at 01:53 PM
Let me preface this by saying I'm no computer nerd - I have a Mac that kinda does everything for me - but this is something I've noticed and it seems like it's going to be pretty significant in terms of recording audio here in the near term. Here's why.

What Exactly Is This Thing, Anyway

If you're like most people and you haven't heard/read about Intel's announcement, Thunderbolt (Light Peak was the development name) is at its heart another newfangled connector thing. ...
