Re: Sennheiser evolution e906 Reviews Quality: 9
Boy, do i love this mic. It's easy to position, doesn't even need a stand for guitar cabs! It's built like a brick, and has several eq curves built into it.
None of that would matter if it only sounded 'okay'. Well, i'm here to tell you it sounds spectacular!
For miking guitar cabs, i had the e604, md421 and md441 in use most often- until i picked up the 906. I usually have two or three mics on a cab so i can choose a blend that works best. My four cabs are in another bedroom, and it's easy for me to lose track of what mic is on what cab, when i have six mics up and moved around often. It also forces me to use my ears, instead of my brain telling me 'that's an expensive mic, it must sound good'.
So i keep coming back to this one mic that sounds way better than the others- doesn't need any help- sounds great by itself. Of course, it's the e906. For guitar cabs, well, for my cabs anyway, it outperforms my 421 and 441 easily.
By outperforms, i mean it sounds bigger and more detailed, there isn't any boxiness or dullness. I set two mics up on a cab so that when the polarity of one is flipped, the track basically disappears, so i know the diaphragms are the same distance from the speaker. In that direct comparison, the 906 smoked 'em all.
I Reliability: 9
I've been using the 906 for a few years without any problem. While it's never left the studio, my e604 which is in the same housing, has done hundreds of gigs from mexico to europe without failing, ever. After a gig i just throw (sometimes literally) it in my pedal board's soft case (with all the pedals) and next night it's fine. Overall Rating: 9
I would recommend this mic to anybody recording guitar amps. You see the old clips of pink floyd singing thru the identical-looking 406, and i'm sure this would be a fine vocal mic at a gig, tho i never tried. I have used it on toms, snare, bass cabs, and congas in studio settings, and it was fine.
As a cab mic tho, this is a jewel.
