16 bit 44.1 Khz. That's the only wav. file that will play on a CD.
That's one big reason that the quest for higher numbers is little too esoteric. The computer calculations along the way are more accurate, but in the end you are going to be listening to 16 bit audio.
Theoretically you should be able to mixdown and save a file to anything, but I have heard of computers that get cranky saving a 96KHz. file.
