You can play with compressing some of the parts, but not all of them to see how you like it. Then you can normalize to use the maximum range as you did before, but I don't know of any other ways to make the final mix louder.
As was pointed out, much of the music produced today is made with large amounts of compression so each artist can have the "loudest" music out there.
