wouldn't know - never needed one, I graduated to a drum machine straight away
I see what you're saying now and it makes sense - the drummer gets his chops tighter with a metronome then he records without but is better because of the improved sense of time. That actually sounds like a good plan, especially as long as you keep the recording engineer away from the grid align function
