Cubase calls it automation. I will be doing the same thing soon. I am going to blast a keyboard part but only for the note at the very end of the song, sort of like an LFO effect. I could also just do it with the LFO during the actual performance.

Another way, now that I have so many delicious tracks to use, is to just put the one note on it's own track with the full bore effect on and that is what I'll fade the master on. That would be the fastest easiest way. I have automation semi figured out in Cubase for fader stuff, but not yet for effects or eq changes. If need something unique for a whole middle section of a take you could just cut that section out, paste it to its own track and twist it up there. Having so many tracks takes some getting used to but I love it!
