I do quite often, but in almost every case there is something weird about the way the track was played and I ended up moving the "transistion" from take to the next. I've gotten so used to using lanes when comping vocals that I've gotten where I use that often for other things. It's very common for guitar and bass.

Sure. However, the problem arises when I start getting fancy by slighting moving a kick drum or something like that. It's easy to unselect the tracks when I make a cut or move something.

Maybe it's time to watch my Cubase DVDs again. There may be a crucial part of workflow that I'm missing.
