I would start by creating a new MIDI track. First beat on your MIDI controller and make sure that something lights up in the transport. This is how you know that MIDI is getting into Cubase.

If you are working with MIDI, you aren't recording sound.
I'd recommend you read both MIDI guides in the member's only section as this will help you out dramatically.
