I also ran into some phase problems I think in part to the sensitivity of the mic.
If you are running into phase problems because of the sensitivity of the mic, you've got much bigger problems than the mic. If you are experiencing phase problems with overheads, something is wrong. Your overheads should be phase coherent. Because of the 3-1 rule, your overheads should be in phase with the close mics.

What caused this phase problem? What mics were the culprits?

i have the audio technico 20/20s but are thinking of changeing to the rodes nt1...are they much better
While on the lower end of the price scale, the Audio Technica AT 2020 mics are REAL mics. In other words, you are in the game with those mics. Anything else is going to be a difference in character, not necessarily quality. Of course, character and quality can go hand in hand, but not always.

I wouldn't bother with that upgrade yet. I was reading a review of the MXL V69 last night (I'm trying to fix both of mine) and a big engineer compared the MXL V69 with a Neuman U47. He actually preferred the MXL V69 to the Neuman U47 on acoustic guitar. What does that tell you? It says that price means nothing. The "classic" nature of a microphone means nothing. It's about mating the right mic to the right source. So keep your AT2020 mics for now and work on getting more experience and improving the more important parts of your chain.
