haven't met him, but can't resist this story:
He really seems like a guy who works with the things in front of him like they are play dough. I heard about a concert where he brought people (volunteers/random choices) from the crowd, taught them a vocalization each (little groups of 2's and 3's, I think), and then conducted them - pointed at each to prompt the sound, then the next, back to the first, on to another, got a whole string of melodies going - very cool.
I did meet John Patitucci (spelling?) after a chick corea / herbie hancock concert about 20 years ago - came to the side of the stage and answered a bunch of questions. He had this thing about picking up little licks and stuff, phrasing, etc from other instruments - horn players, etc, he would listen to, to break out of his standard thing and learn more - pretty cool idea.
