I see a lot of the MBOX with Pro Tools on e-bay. That seems to be relatively inexpensive.

Pro Tools is DEFINITELY not the most inexpensive way to go, but it is great if you need to interface with billion dollar studios on a regular basis. I'm a Cubase guy myself.
If you are considering the jump to computer recording, I'd check out the home recording soundcard wizard in my signature.
