Are you using a lot of parallel compression? You may want to leave the attack a little longer on the snare compressor. It gets a little to "attackish" from time to time. When I go for maximum smack in the attack, I almost always put a limiter on it too to catch the extra loud hits..

If you mean by "parallel" compression, compressors on individual channels.. yes, and I'll limit the snare some more

I think you've hit the nail on the head here. I thought it was missing something, and that's probably what it is... Our bass/keyboard player is coming over this weekend, with his leslie, maybe it'll help. Anyways I agree, more build up to the end
