 scratch track

what is a scratch track?
i want to record with this dude. bass, drums and git live. he said no problem but there might be a little bit of bleed onto the git mic. (small room and even with booth for isolation this might be a prob)
so, he suggested using the git as a scratch track.
i think i know what this is but i thought id ask you fine folks! im guessing i will basically be playing the git part over again later. yes? no?
