Yeah. Looping would be the best place to start. Even with my very limited MIDI ability, and with all the MIDI drums that I've heard over the years, nothing beats the sound of a well recorded, finely tuned accousitic drum set. But there are some very realistic patches out there.
The clarinet idea sounds enticing also. I always thought a loop of Glenn Miller's "In The Mood" done right would sound interesting. Gene Krupa was the original groove drummer.
