While some samples may be better than others, it really comes down to creative programming. Every hit on the ride is different with most drummers, etc..
In the end, being familiar with the instruments you want to replicate makes a difference. I've owned and played both drums and a Hammond H3, for example.
I bought a snare, just to have one expressive pad.
